I was just in a car accident.
I think I'm okay, but I'm all shook up, my heart is pounding, my ears are buzzing and I have an inexplicable urge to cry.

Please send hugs.

I've been there. Three accidents in four years - four herniated discs - constant pain - handicapped placards on my vehicles.

Make sure you're examined thoroughly by a good doctor.

Though if you hit your head, you might want to watch for signs of concussion.

Have you been to the ER to get checked out?

16. No, I haven't been to the ER
I really think I'm okay. I'd stopped completely and he mostly just tore off my front bumper and pranged up the front end a bit. I didn't hit my head, or even take much of a jarring.

Sometimes things happen in one's life for which the only solace is the hug of a soft friend.

And, likely, a martini. But the hug must come first.

23. Poor thing
I know that feeling well. BIG HUGS!

I was in one so bad in June that I had one big bruise from right behind my right ear all the way across my chest and abrasions from the seat belt! Thank goodness for it, or I would have flown through the windshield (we t-boned a woman who turned out in front of us--the passenger in her car was killed on impact).

I couldn't breathe and it felt like someone had crushed my chest.

I'm sure someone has already said it, but MAKE SURE you are ok. Sometimes the adrenaline is pumping so hard, you don't really know at first. Take it easy, lie down. Hope you feel better.

Oh and definitely cry. Heck I cried in the few minutes right after impact, because I was so freaked out. Which made my daughter cry. Bad mom.

38. My heart goes out to you...
...but don't assume that you're "okay". I was in an accident last October and my life is completely destroyed. The day after, I thought I was banged up and bruised and all would be okay in a week or so. So, after many, many, many tests I have 4 herniated discs in my neck which HAVE to be removed (replaced or fused? I'm still not sure), a torn rotater cuff in my right shoulder, some lower back problems, and now I'm seeing a neuro psychologist because I have evidence of severe head trauma which wasn't evident at the time. I did, afterall, bust out the window with my head. It's never ending. I'm on Duragesic patches, Soma, Lortab, use a TENS unit, lidoderm patches.......among many other things. I can't keep up with it. BUT - I thought I was going to be "okay" directly after the wreck.

For the record, I was hit by a school bus driver who made an illegal turn in front of me while I was traveling at 55mph. Yes, I drive the speed limit. Anyway, I've never EVER had a ticket of any kind, not even a parking ticket, in my over 30 years of driving. And, no, there were no children on the bus. Yes, I was wearing a seat belt, and my airbag went off. Because of the dynamics of the accident I bust out the window on that side (drivers) with my head. It's amazing how much damage was done that wasn't immediately evident.

Oh - ironically - 2 weeks before the accident I had my yearly check up, but we did an extreme checkup because I had just turned 50. My doctor gave me the results after examining me for the accident injuries. The results BEFORE the accident: "All the results were those of a HEALTHY 18 year old". Needless to say, I'm undergoing treatment for sever depression. At least I'm alive.

39. I know the feeling!
But you'd better get yourself checked out, just in case. Sometimes injuries don't show up for a day or two.

I was in an accident in 1999 when the car I was riding in was T-boned, and although I walked away, a medical exam revealed a bruised liver, and within a day or two I had massive seatbelt bruises and felt as if I'd just done 2,000 sit ups.

In case you have to sue anyone, the medical exam will come in handy.

40. Number One: Are you okay?
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 08:00 PM by rezmutt
That shook-up, heart-pounding, ear-buzzing feeling is all from the adrenaline pumping through your body. I am so very sorry, SOteric, that this happened to you. It is a terrible shock to the body and the emotions.

Make sure that you're okay -- visit a doc if you can, have everything checked over. Check for any specific aches and pains tomorrow -- the adrenaline can block Talk about the incident as much as you can, don't hold back. Let your mind do its thing, even if it means playing the incident over and over ad nauseum.

Is there a friend or colleague who can assist you with the pragmatic matters of car repair, phone calls, rides, etc.?

If I were there, I'd draw a warm bath for you, and give you some herbal tea. Barring that, here are some BIG hugs for you:

Even if you're ok physically, it can shake a person up a lot. Take care of yourself and if you need to cry, that's alright (kind of cathartic too sometimes).
