I stayed up late reading that stupid "Tipping Point" book for my book grou
Now I'm mad at everyone.

Is this the dumbest book EVER? I remember almost falling off the StairMaster in hysterics when the New Yorker reamed "The Bridges of Madison County" for being the worst book in living memory, but it can't possibly have been as stupid as this.

Please! Help me get my sanity back! Remind me of something that will restore my equilibrium and take away the anger I feel at having wasted two hours of my life on this terrible book!

1. I had a boss that raved about that book all the time.
I'm glad I never read it. Thanks for taking one for the team. Now I know better.

2. At least it wasn't "The DaVinci Code" or "Digital Fortress"
:puke: and :puke:

3. The "DaVinci Code" was better than this
though I am still fuming about "Cryptonomicon."

But honestly! TTP is just pro-business BS. Did you know that Paul Revere started the American Revolution because he was a Maven and a Connector and a Salesman? Apparently the Minutemen didn't exist.

4. It had good info but could have been half the length
The points are good and useful - but it got very repetitious and boring.

I tried to take the lessons and leave the rest.

I actually think the Kerry campaign could benefit from some of the lessons in TTP.

5. Like what?
The re-writing of history? Are you implying that the Bush campaign is benefiting from this?

Another example I can give is the sudden drop in violent crime wave in the 1990's. Although the studies have been buried, there is a lot of valid argument that the drop in violent crime coincided with the 20-year anniversary of Roe v. Wade. Mr. Tipping Point conveniently avoids that little fact.

6. Like mastering communications better
As you pointed out, TTP breaks down Mavens, Connectors and so on.

I do development for a non profit and my own experience is that these breakdowns are accurate - knowing how to craft the message and who to use in what capacity. In short, knowing how to shift public opinion.

7. I thought it was pretty good...
The message I got from it was that businesses (and other organizations) that get too big tend to implode.

Too bad the Dumbyass camp didn't read that part.
