Computer question: thoughts on Celeron-based notebooks?
Edited on Fri Aug-27-04 09:25 AM by T Roosevelt
Looking at buying a new notebook computer, and have heard varying reviews of Celeron-based models. Are they worth the savings (I've noticed they are typically cheaper than the Centrino, etc)?

On edit: damn typos...

1. Savings not worth it, in my opinion
I have tried a few generations for my office fleet since Celerons first appeared and have never had a Celeron-based computer that performed satisfactorily.

Good luck on your computer search.

2. Recommendations?
I'm leaning towards the IBM Thinkpad (R- or T- models - non-Celeron), though I've always owned Toshibas (and been happy with them). The new ones just seem to expensive (especially when compared with the Thinkpads).

3. I have a Thinkpad R-40 that I like

$1299.

It has been around the country with me and is still doing well. Can't tell you how many unsecured corporate wireless networks that the Centrino has been able to find for me.

The plastic chassis worried me for a bit, but that's damn tough plastic, and as I think I said in another thread recently, since I quit getting shitfaced, I don't worry about dropping the damn thing so much.

Check the other models on CDW and see what sort of prices and features you can get.

4. Avoid Celerons if you can.
They aren't THAT bad, really. However, comparatively, they do not perform nearly as well as any of the other options. So, only buy a Celeron notebook if you absolutely can't afford anything else. The extra $1-200 is worth it.
