Fava Beans
Strange damn things. Kinda meaty-tasting. Like a weird marriage of beef and starch, with a vague liver taste. Fresh green ones are supposed to be great as a paste in springtime, like avacado. Contain varying amounts of levodopa, used to treat Parkinson's Disease. Good source of protein, and contains large amounts of arginine, phenylalanine and tyrosine, the amino acid precursors to hormones essential to building muscle.

There is a very rare disease called favism, which is a serious reaction to eating raw fava beans or breathing their pollen. The disease affects some people of Mediterranean descent. The risk of eating cooked fava beans is small. If cooking dried beans, be sure to soak them overnight and cook them with a small amount of baking soda to reduce gas.

Good with garlic and lemon.

3. Delicious!
I love them fresh from the hull, with old sheep cheese(pecorino), goat cheese or parmesan cheese. Maybe some ciabatta or baguette, and a bit of red wine. I've never got them in Germany, though.
