We got together tonight for a state-of-the-disunion hang-out (sounds harsh, we're still good friends) and she starts talking about the guy she is seeing now. At first, I'm like 'Kill me.'

But then the good stuff.

They were out the other night, and got to talking politics. She asked him who he voted for in the primary, and he says he didn't vote. She plumbs him for details, and finds out eventually that he is a registered Republican.

She got up and left. Left him at the restaurant. Walked out the fuckin door. Boom.

He called and begged, and she said he has 21 days to show her WRITTEN PROOF that he is no longer a Republican. 21 days. If he doesn't, it's over.

She broke my heart, but maybe now you know why I was cracy crazy crazy about her. She fucking rules. :)

I mean, I would think after a few dates, you'd get the general idea of a person's political leanings. Maybe not "registered Republican", but at least a vague notion of where they are on the political spectrum. I mean, I could tell from my first conversation with my ex-wife that she was pretty liberal (well, I shouldn't say conversation - basically she summarized to me her whole life story in 3 hours and I mostly listened. After she finished, she said it was really nice talking to me, to which I responded, "And it was nice listening to you," and the rest is history...)

But, a 21 day ultimatum seems to indicate they've been together a bit longer than a few dates. Would your ex take a guy that is like a Lowell Weicker liberal New England Republican, which may be better than dating a Joe Lieberman conservative Democrat?

I've always admired strong-willed women - just watch out that future girlfriends don't get jealous of your relationship with her.

So, I look at it this way...about 25% of the population is Republican (hopefully less this year!). That's alot of people. Some of them may just be ok people albeit misguided. If you have decided to exclude 25% of the population from your social life and you happen to go on a dinner with a member of that shunned group, why would you not politely eat your dinner, try to show the guy the error of his ways and if he wasn't budging, politely pay half the bill, thank him for the evening and be politly done with it?

However I wasn't even thinking about that. As a mother of grown sons, not as old as Will, but still, old enough to be on their own, I would say the same to them. If an girl friend who broke their heart was hanging around I would at least expect her not to talk about other guys she's dating. Cut her loose, she isn't coming back. There are nicer women out there.
That would be my advice.
