Pet owners I have a few questions...
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 09:04 PM by xultar
First you all know I have a Chihuahua, Onyx. Well he's lonely. I wanted to get him a friend. I found these two pups at a rescue organization that specializes in small breed and mix breed dogs.
Meet Pansy and Casper. Now, they want them to be adopted together. I don't know about 3 pups even though they are Chihuahuas and they are small that is still a lot.
What do you think? I offered to foster Casper until we find him a home. Oh I also have 3 cats. I'm in my own home. I have a pet sitter who comes everyday to help out.
I've even started to pick out new names...
Pansy = Xena, Bella, Chloe, Mia, or Leia
Casper = Dior, Gucci, Diesel, or Zeus

My current Chihuahua Onyx...

Xena and Zeus. My boys each want a cat when we move in the Spring (hopefully). They already have names picked out for the cats - Napster and Edward Scissorhands.

3. Go for it...
As the unintended owner of three dogs/2 cats and assorted winged critters & litle rodents, I'm kind of an expert. We started out with 1 small dog and through happenstance, wound up with 3. You will do just fine as long as you recognize they have their own personalities and will need to be handled differently from each other. Currently our brood includes one devoted lap dog, one dog that lives for a romp outdoors and our newest that has no clue she is only 3.5 lbs.

So...go for it. You won't regret all the love that will wash over you whenever you open a can/bag of food or return from the mailbox!

5. You can try it for a while if you foster
one, right? Then if it's working out you can adopt him.

I've got 2 dogs and 2 cats, all but one are rescues. They are great but it can be pretty hectic with this many animals...I don't have a pet sitter though. My dogs are a good bit bigger too!

They are REALLY cute!

7. AAAAAWWWWWW .... they are so adorable
I have Leo, a chi-mix (avatar) and Tommy, a orange tabby (looks like a slim Garfield).

I wanted to get another Chi for Leo because Tommy just doesn't know how to play with Leo. But we are planning to move away by the end of the year, so I'll have to wait a couple of month until we are settled in.

Can you try it with those three and if they get too much, maybe you can find Caspar another home, as you mentioned. However, I doubt that you are willing to give Caspar up after a while.

17. I have 3 dogs
and it works well except when they want attention at the same time. Really, one always wants to play and can usually get one of the other two do play with. We have always had 3 dogs since we got married. It works, go for it.

21. You know I can't stop thinking about them. I'm so smitten!
I think I'm going to give it a try. Hopefully they will let me foster for a week to see how Onyx will take to having brothers and sisters. I've watched the dog training show on Animal Planet every saturday and sunday for about 4 years, even the re-runs. They had a lot of shows about canine jealousy. I think I'm ready but you'll never know for sure until they are in the house.

23. That is true
about the jealousy. You might do well bringing in two who already know each other, it should be easier than bringing in one when you already have two but we have done it and with a little patience and a watchfull eye it has always worked. Be certain to give the doggie you have now LOTS of extra time and attention and give him a place to get away, perhaps a new special toy. Give it enough time. Our littlest dog came from the shelter into a house with 2 big dogs. She walked right in and took over. She is now the tattle tail and the enforcer. It took a while for the others to get used to her but once they did it was wonderful. Ahhhh, good for you. You MUST keep us informed. Lucky dogs and lucky you.

20. How does Onyx feel about it?
Until two weeks ago my sister-in-law had two dogs. An 11 year old blind, diabetic Golden Retriever (Boo) and a year lab/Australian Cattle dog mix (Melby). The puppy wouldn't leave the old dog in peace so she decided she needed to get another dog so the younger one would have his own "pet". My first reaction was that, if she brought another pup into the house Boo would wonder why she didn't just put him down instead of torturing him like this.

Well, she came home with a 13 week female lab/some kind of hound and maybe some Rottweiler mix. She had taken the younger dog along to help pick his new friend. (Melby loves all other dogs and labors under the delusion that all other dogs love him..he seems truly perplexed when he meets someone who won't play with him.) Anyway, it couldn't have worked out better. The new puppy did go after the old dog who growled at her and now she treats him with nothing but respect and Melby is too busy playing with her to bother Boo. Poor old Boo can now get his ears scratched and tummy rubbed without Melby trying to get in the way.

22. Onyx will be jealous but I think beause Casper and Pansy will have
each other that may help. I know Onyx has to remain the Alpha dog. Casper I hear is very shy. They didn't want to break Casper and Pansy up beaause Casper is very attached to her. I think Onyx will continue to sleep on the bed. Casper and Pansy will sleep together in a super comfy pet bed next to my bed until they feel comfortable enough to come up an join Onyx and I. I have puppy stairs so they can come up and down as they see fit.

28. I have 4 cats right now
and I have had multiple cats and dogs. Sometimes, and I don't know if you ever had the problem, but you introduce one more animal into the mix and all hell breaks loose with all of them. What I mean by hell is fighting, where they really want to kill each other or piddling around the house, that type of stuff. Is anyone stalking? You know how one animal can be playing/stalking and it scares the living hell out of the stalkee? Then the stalkee takes it out on the living room rug? Younger animals often do this to very old animals and the old ones just don't need it? Are you having any of that going on?

29. the artist turned mulitple pet owner becomes a comedian - Neitsche
I think its the most unproductive thing you can ever do. I did it. Both dogs were great but they became my life. So much responsibility for so many years. They cost me thousands in vet bills. They made me laff. They made me cry. They fought other dogs. They got out and made me waste hours searching for them. They scared away cool girls. They attracted the wrong girls. They gave me fleas. They gave me ticks. They chewed up a down comforter and I had feathers in my apt. for months. They killed a cat. They killed a racoon and rolled around in it. They woke up my neighbors. They chewed up shit. They shit for spite. They shit by accident. They farted. Yeah, I loved them to death and when they both passed at ages 13 and 14, I cried like a baby. But i do not think i would do it agaoin.

31. I Say Get 'Em All
Little rat dogs like that can't be that much trouble, and the poop is easy to pick up in the backyard.

Now, in my little house, having three like my beastie would be ridiculous. But, since these are little, teeny doggies, i'd say go for it.
