Abercrombie W.Va T-Shirt Upsets Governor (yahoo)

{

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - It's Gov. Bob Wise vs. Abercrombie & Fitch — round two. Wise said the New Albany, Ohio-based retailer's latest T-shirt poking fun at West Virginia is "cruel."

The T-shirt's slogan is "West Virginia: No Lifeguard At the Gene Pool" and it has an image of a boy and girl in a kiddie pool superimposed on an outline of the state. The company is selling the T-shirt in women's sizes for $24.50.

"What I've learned about a bully is if you don't respond to a bully they just keep punching you," Wise told WSAZ-TV on Tuesday.

"I'd rather punch back. But I'd rather punch back using my plan, my scheme and at the same time get a positive message out about West Virginia," he said.

In March, Wise sent a letter to Abercrombie & Fitch demanding that the clothing retailer dump another T-shirt that spoofed the state with the slogan, "It's All Relative in West Virginia." He also criticized that T-shirt during an appearance on NBC's "Today."

West Virginia is not the only state being lampooned by the company. Other T-shirts target Kentucky ("Electricity In Almost Every Town") and Wisconsin ("Wisconsin Cuts the Cheese").

Personally, I could have thought of better WV T-shirt designs.

1. Personally, we can do without mean-spirited regional xenophobia

Wise is absolutely doing what's right. A+F is contributing in this among many ways to America creeping higher and higher on the pseudo-fascistic-culture scale. Americans, largely in the more affluent parts of the North and West, see hatred against segments of American society perfectly acceptable to voice as non discrimatory or prejudice as long as the targets are white.

8. Well said...
Well said Bombtrack. Don't those a-holes have a class action lawsuit against them about their hiring/firing practices. I remember a 60 Minutes piece on them a while back where the company had a policy of having only Stepford children as salespeople on the floor.

2. it's agrudge match with wise now
abercrombie made a similar shirt with the state pictured and the words 'all in the family" under it. wise denounced it publicly about a year ago. that's why a&f is making another WV t-shirt. just to capitalize on the publicity.

3. Is it me, or A&F just make really expensive crap?
This is coming from the same company who made thongs for 4 and 5 year olds. They want the spotlight to help sell more of their overpriced crap.

OK, maybe its not all crap. Wait, yes it is :)

5. Boycott Abercrombie! Unfair to Veterans!
I personally know a young man who served in the Marines in Iraq last Feb/Mar., who has been passed over for promotion to store manager for over 2 yrs. (he's an assistant mgr.) because of his Marine Reserve duties.

This company needs to be exposed for the whores that they are...I am encouraging him to get a lawyer, their actions are illegal, nes pas??

10. Is he still...
Is he still in Marine Reserves? If he is he may have a case against them. Right before "W" went into Vietraq last year we had a mobilizaton stand-down. The command went over very carefully all the rights that reservists now have to not only protect our jobs but to ensure that we are not penalized in any way for our service. Encourage him to check it out.
