Save the Speedo!

Published: 9/27/2000

The television ratings for the Olympics are at an all-time low - people are not watching. I have an idea why not. Swimmers competing in this year's Summer Olympics are allowed to wear a full-body swimsuit, which is said to increase performance. Allowing the swimmers to wear these suits during competition was not a good decision. Bring back the Speedo!

....

Without the competitive swimmer's support of the Speedo, it will become the exclusive costume of overweight European men and homosexuals. Before you react to my generalization, when was the last time you were on a beach in Europe or a gay beach? Speedos abound. My eyes have seen the glory!

1. As with the Emmys and every other pompous award ceremony,
the people involved in them seem 'out of reach' with the working classes. (not 'the common man' or 'the little people' as others would denigrate them as).

People no longer care.

They find more out of so-called "'reality' television".

3. I agree with you in principle, but
...when were the Olympics ever about the working classes?

4. As with the emmys, pro sports, et al,
the Olympics were never about the working classes.

They were something for us to watch and go "ooooh, such deserving people!".

Now that the price of (any) entertainment is grossly overinflated, people aren't so happy. Or they are in a dichotomy; they still love their pro idols but detest the ludicrous amount of money they make?

2. Yesterday
At the tip of Passa Grille, I thought I saw a beached up whale and was ready to call the marine center when someone told me it was a gay european in speedos.
