28. It's the difference between responsible drinking and idiocy.
I think there IS a difference. If you feel the need to become obnoxious whn you drink, somebody SHOULD deal with it.

People who drink are fine. Drunks are fine. The issue is social behavior. When you get obnoxious, drunk or sober, you deserve to be smacked for it.

...usually an upper classman who gets the best room on the dormintory floor - IN EXCHANGE for, being the resident 'mom' for the underclasspersons. Someone who the student residents can come talk to....the 'living room' of the floor, if you will....It's a pretty big responsibility for someone, it's pretty cool actually.

on edit: Let me change that - can be 'cool' (I guess I was lucky), can be 'unholy' with the wrong person as RA

My RAs at Boston College have a kewl system: unless you're 1) a danger to someone 2) wicked obnoxious to people who don't want to be harassed they leave you alone. Hell, my RA even drank with us- she was awesome!
We also bribed other RAs with cookies, never got written upO8)
Seriously, cut us some slack. We have enough stress and we just want to cut loose

30. I'm an AC, I have nothing to ask you, but something to tell you
If you are of age and it is not a dry building, then you did nothing wrong (unless you were on duty or making rounds). However, what type of example are you setting for your residents? Some will see you as a hypocrite and that will be a tough label to shake. It might have been better to have called the RA-on-Duty or a sober colleague. Be ready for some backlash. Best to tell your HD now, so s/he will be ready during the judicial hearing.

I am a former Area Coordinator and that is what I would tell my RA staff!

That is good to hear! Residents look for ANY sign of "weakness" in a RA! I have had many a good RA get treated poorly because of misconceptions and the fact they were just doing their job. I have been a RA, an asst. Hall Director, Hall Director, and Area coordinator, there is not much I haven't seen!

We never want our RAs do what we did! We were just as bad as you all are! You know that residents think RAs are all "goody-goody" and oddly enough, RAs think that of their HCs...well. it not true! :) We have all been around the block a few times and have more than a t-shirt to prove it! :)

It's an RA's job to "babysit" a dorm. Drunk or sober, dorm residents aren't udually permitted to disturb other residents.

48. i get it now
I know what a RA does, I am in the field! My concern was the "appearance" of inappropriateness. Residents will latch on to anything when they get in trouble. However, in this case, it appears the RA was doing what she was supposed to do, confronting (with backup), and taking an appropriate response to the situation. I was more concerned at the initial post and will admit (hangs head in shame) I did not continue to read the post, so I was unaware there was backup and the initial complaint was noise not alcohol.

53. yes, that's exactly what I'm doing. I am condoning obnoxious drunks.
the question here, I feel, is whether or not the OP had prior knowledge of the students' drinking before she busted them.

if she didn't, I don't see any real moral dilemma here—the kid was acting like an ass, disturbing the other residents, etc.

if she did, however, I think there's a problem. Either get the kid in trouble for drinking or ignore it—simply don't involve the campus police or whoever when it starts to become a nuisance

Why is prior knowledge of the students' drinking an issue? (assume she did have prior knowledge...they were acting drunk)

I didn't get the "moral dilemma" thing at all. Perhaps you could explain your third paragraph.

58. because if she DID have prior knowledge (i.e., something more than a hunch
or unreliable intuition...more at tangible evidence) then she too was culpable for their already illegal behavior. only when this behavior apparently became disruptive did she take responsibility and call campus cops, when she should have acted thus from the very outset (when she initially discovered they had were getting hammered).

either way, the OP suggests that she called the cops on them as soon as she discovered WHY the kids were being disruptive, so I guess she's blameless

I believe an RA is more effective when they allow minor transgressions to go "unnoticed" unless they turn into bigger issues (like disturbing other residents).

which is actually better for the resident, because they won't get chaged $145 for minor in possession that will go on their permanent record. all they'll do is meet w/ the hall coordinator and get their first warning in a 3-strikes-yer-out policy.
