God sometimes I HATE PEOPLE....
Grrr..was just browsing my local humane society page and saw this:

Cocoa is a goergous siamese. She is 5 years old. Her previous owner had had her for 4 years and brought her in because she did not get along with her husband or the other cat. She has been declawed and fixed. She does have a bit of the Siamese additude and so the previous owners have recommended that she be around children over the age of 5. Come and see this talkative little girl today!

Grrrrr....My cats come with me! Love me, love my cats dammit! Or at least tolerate them!

12. too me these "CAT LOVERS" that declaw their cats
should have their fingernails (no make it FINGERS) removed! It is so inhumane and CRUEL! How would people that do this to a cat suspect it might even have a chance of living if the cat might need to defend itself? Do they even think this far in advance or do they live in their little lala lands in the sky?

It makes for a very neurotic, psychotic animal!

I'll never forget seeing the ones that these people next door to me had out in the fields trying to be "cats" - digging at the ground after a gopher until their paws bled! That's right, BLED! :( :( :( :( :( :grr: :( :( :( :grr:

And the assholes thought it was funny! Funny! Yeah REAL FUNNY ALRIGHT!

PEOPLE THAT DECLAW CATS SHOULD BE LOCKED UP and NEVER allowed to adopt a cat/kitten again. They do not know what it means to love a cat, muchless another human being IMO. I hope it is outlawed soon - I know plans are in the workings and the sooner the better!

People that do this often say it is to save their precious furniture. Jesus, what stupid assed priorities! How valuable is a damn sofa anyway?

I wouldn't like people much either if I were a declawed cat, would you? :grr:

:dem:

P.S. I hope someone adopts this poor cat soon!

10. I do not understand
how people can do such things. I have 2 dogs in the house. I have 4 cats in the barn which isn't my preference but one dog is cat unfriendly.I live on a small farm and people just throw cats out! Sometimes they have been de-clawed. These cats don't know how to survive. Usually when I get them they are starving and/or dehydrated. At least when they are here they get fed twice a day and get neutered and have vet care. I can't comprehend how people can act as if these sentient creatures are garbage.

and i saw a dog trainer on tv whose advice is keep the animal-get rid of the person. his reasoning (which was sound) was that the animal is much more in tune with what an a-hole the person is...that kitty has probably had a stressful life living with a jerk that hates her and a bigger jerk who supported that hate.

19. I understand why SOME people de-claw--I really do.
I had a cat that I rescued rescued from an abusive situation and I had no choice--I had to have her de-clawed or else give her over to the local shelter who would have had her put down for being too aggressive. I spent a year with my legs and arms in shreds--to the point that it was a problem for me to wear short sleeves or even shorts. Infection is always a possibility with cat scratches too.

Nobody I knew would take her. I finally came to the point that it was either de-claw or else have her put down. I loved her--but I was afraid to walk thru my home. Something had to give, and I finally came to the point that I figured it was better to de-claw than to kill her.

She lived with me for 17 years before finally dying of kidney failure.

Now, before everyone jumps on me and calls me a horrible evil person, I do want to say that she was the only cat I've ever lived with that was de-clawed. I pray I never face that decision again.

I doubt this poor kitty was in the same boat as Tillie was--but I do think it can happen that the only way to keep a cat is to de-claw them.

FWIW, Tillie hated men. She was scared to death of them or else actively aggressive with them. I knew my husband was "the one" when he came over the first time and the cat jumped up in his lap and bugged him for attention--let him rub her belly, if you can believe it!

I always figured it was a package deal--me and that psycho bitch cat. I had promised Tillie that I'd take care of her for the rest of her life--and if it meant that I was single--then so be it.

I agree fully that a lot of people don't take pets as seriously as they should--they see them as disposable. I also agree fully that many of those pets get the shit end of the stick and suffer at the hands of humans. It is a shame by association that all of us carry, I think.

Our current kitty is a shelter kitty. He doesn't bite, he doesn't scratch (except in play by accident--he misses the string and gets a hand instead.) Most of the time he doesn't even get his claws trimmed--he doesn't fight it--but you can tell he's not really into it.

20. How do you give up an animal after 5 years?
What sort of mindset does it take? How shallow must you be? My partner and I have agreed that we will not move from our home until our springer is gone (he's only six)...This is his home, his world; he's even bonded with our retired neighbors and has access to their house too. He sleeps on our bed or at our feet, calms us when we're upset, and plays to keep us alert. I understand each of his barks; one means I'm bored, another means help, a third is "Strangers! Strangers!" There are many more.

He's part of my life. We're part of the same pack. How could I give him up?

24. Oh, wait! Is that a big evil over there? Okay...let's ignore the little..
...evils of the world.

I am not going to apologize for still having the sense of outrage at some people's self-centeredness in life that they would punish a cat for their mistakes.

This isn't a contest of "my atrocity is bigger than your atrocity".

If you want to play that game, get the hell out of my thread.

Like I said, I consider it a mark of pride that I can still feel outrage over how selfish people can be and the mistreatment of an innocent creature.

25. I'm not really sure where the mistreatment is...
Where is the mistreatment of this cat? It was given to the humane society so that someone who really wanted it could get it. Would you rather it be left with an owner who does not care for it? Would you rather it be abused and ignored or humanely put to sleep?

26. No. The atrocity is in a person that adopts a kitten...
...has it altered and mutilated (de-clawed) and then up and decides to get rid of it because it doesn't get along with the husband (who most likely entered the picture a lot later than the cat).

A majority of cats that are taken to the humane society end up being euthanized.

28. If it's lucky....if it's not, it's ashes to ashes for her.
I take pet ownership very seriously. Some people suggested I get rid of my cats because I have AIDS and my response was "Honey, if my cats were going to give me a disease they would have done it long before now".

She will probably be lucky since she is purebred and very adoptable. Many are kept for less than a week before they are euthanized.

It still annoys me to no end that people take pet ownership so lightly. It's that kind of attitude that fills up shelters across the nation.

I understand sometimes there are circumstances beyond the control of the owner, but this just sounds callous to me.

30. I still think
a humane ending is better than the cat (or any other animal) being ignored or abused. Hopefully someone will adopt it. That's what the humane society is for. We always had people drop off cats on my family's farm "assuming" they would be cared for. Usually they were discovered on the road the next morning run over by a car before they ever made it into the barn. At least it was given to a place where it could at least attempt to get a second chance.

31. And I think it's irresponsible pet ownership.
It's just an empathy thing with me. I just can't see why people can't be more responsible. Sure pets are sometimes inconvenient. So are kids. But the frequency with which people just dump an animal seems cold-hearted to me. I have dragged Mariko around with me since I adopted her 18 years ago and I just can't see how people can dump them.

36. it is pure selfishness and self-centered behavior
Cats will do what they do. Some of them scratch yes they do. I have one that does myself - one from an animal rescue. He'll rip you good in fact if he gets mad. So what do I do? Have him declawed? No! I respect him for who he is and I understand why he is this way.

If he doesn't like being picked up, well I respect that.

People that have cats they don't understand and then they mutilate them in hopes of changing them to accommodate their personal selfish needs have no right owning any pet.

If you end up with a pet you don't want, find a home for it. If you cannot find a home for it, then I guess you take it to the vet and have it put down. But try hard! Pay the money to run ads in the paper, etc. I adopted a cat that was a year old this way and she lived to be 17 years old and no, I did not have to mutilate her and torture her to get her to conform.

If my cats don't like someone, I don't like them either. Tough! Perhaps this is a way to find out who you are really dealing with and it is the easy way!

I commend you for keeping your cats btw. I have serious health problems myself but I still take care of my cats. Till death do us part! :D

 to you for being a fine person and your cats know it! :loveya:

35. here's one I ran across that just broke my heart . . .
meet Louie . . .

and read what happened to him (bold emphasis mine . . . )

"Louie"
I saw the message go round the rescue lists on the internet: "Senior shepherd mix at Bridgeport CT shelter will be put to sleep tomorrow morning if he is not adopted". I waited and saw no takers. I looked at the picture linked to the message. My heart melted - 10+ years old and turned in to the shelter by his owners - "Too Old" they said. I waited longer - surely someone would pull him from this shelter which was trying so hard to find him a home. Finally at 5 am I sent out an e-mail saying that he was welcome here. Lisa, the animal lover who sent the internet plea for his rescue took him home, bathed him and brought him here - she is his angel! He is ADORABLE - he has the 'silly' grin that old mellow dogs have. He is PROUD, remembering how handsome he was in his youth and he is LOVING, oh so loving. Our veterinarian says that with some TLC and frequent feedings he will soon thrive and be ready to go to his retirement home. You will be blessed if you can give him that.

like you, sometimes I just HATE people . . .

Have spent all hours of the night nursing the one back to what i thought was a normal life......but so far just crawls.
Have spent a ton on this little guy.....but well worth it he would just been left to die. Hoping I can give him some type of quailty life. Wish me luck!!
