2. I was a big Yes and Genesis freak in high school
and then I discovered punk. I still think Yes and Genesis are really cool, although I don't listen to them a lot now. Maybe I should pull out all my Yes records for fun... I was eyeing some on CD.

3. Genesis
with Pete Gabe, but King Crimson is a really really close second.

Yes is close, though.

What was the matter with the first thread?

5. Genesis, but only prior to Steve Hackett's departure.
In some ways, the loss of Gabriel only made them better. The same can't be said after Hackett left. "Seconds Out" captured the last moments of brilliance from this band.

9. I almost agree with you about the loss of Gabriel...
But I still treasure the early Genesis albums the most. I think after Hackett left, they pretty much became a different band entirely. I agree about "Seconds Out." I saw them on that tour in Europe and then saw them on the "Duke" tour. I like "Duke" in general, though I don't listen to it often. As to the live shows? No comparison, much better with Hackett.

I don't listen to "Lamb" much at all these days. Hardly ever. I respect it but ultimately I think that it marked a decisive end for the band with Peter in the sense that they were moving in different directions. His first solo album was such a radical, forward-moving shift, and still a vital cutting-edge record all these years later. I guess the split was best for all involved.

15. I saw the "Seconds Out / Wind & Wuthering" tour in San Francisco

...and yes, Phil Collins was / is one of the greatest drummers in the world. Period. When he walked back up to the drum kit for the finale of "Los Endos" with Chester Thompson, it was a jaw-dropping sight. Absolute precision from both players. To hear Hackett play "Firth of Fifth" live...unbelievable. When Collins stood on the stage and spit out the "with the Gods of Magog, swarming around, the Pied Piper leads his children underground" lyrics to "Supper's Ready"...THAT was a show.

I have / enjoy all of the Gabriel stuff, but yeah...it was a different band.

No offense to Daryl Steurmer fans, but he NEVER filled Hackett's shoes (and neither did Rutherford in the studio).

I heard that Winterland (the usual San Francisco stop-over for Genesis) was half-full on the "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" tour. I also remember that "Trick Of The Tail," both on FM radio and among my fellow Prog fans, was met with universal enthusiasm (helped by Bill Bruford alternating with Chester Thompson on the live gigs). By the time of "Wind and Wuthering," the fans were rabid...and READY...and Winterland was PACKED.

:toast:

6. TOOL!!!!!
Any band with a space alien for a singer and a drummer with five arms is the best on ANY list.

14. Nonsense. Krautrock is not Prog-rock.
It's so much better than that.
