1. Since you asked...

...I've gotta whole lotta Mayfield on CD!

In fact, I was on the air doing my college radio soul show the night after Curtis died in 1999. I dedicated the first two hours of that week's broadcast to the man's legacy.

3. We the People who are darker than blue
I have been a radio dj/journalist for many years.

"People get ready" was a staple

I was blessed to see Curtis when he first left the Impressions (a great group) in the woods at a Black (African-American) Country Club in the sticks.

Whatta Night. Eddie Kendricks and the Senators as well as early Kool and the Gang were also on the three night bill. Damn it was the hottest three musical nights in the coolest place ever. I was a teenager and it just blew my mind. I took up the sax after that and still play occasionally mostly doing performance art/spoken word poetry. Those nights left a lasting impression on me.

Curtis' death was a great loss and "People Get Ready" is still one of the best songs ever written.

His antiwar music was exceptional (I forget the album name though). Think it was "Back in the World". Phenomenal.

4. I'm a huge Mayfield fan but love his last CD
I really like his last CD from 96: New World Order. He made it after he was paralyzed and due to the partial paralysis of his diaphragm he had to record the lyrics phrase by phrase and word by word. It did not get much attention when it came out. I love some of the songs on it.

6. It's Alright
Just makes me feel sunny. Steve Gaines, one of the casualties of the Skynyrd plane crash, did a WONDERFUL cover of this one on a demo tape he made before joining them. Either version makes me just feel plain good.

11. Me too!
Great song!

It's been covered by many. Stevie Winwood does a good cover. Huey Lewis and the News, believe it or not, do a great blue-eyed soul accapella cover. It's the only song by them I can stomach.
