Cafeteria Etiquette: Damnit, read the rules!!!
Edited on Thu Aug-19-04 11:40 AM by LynneSin

Why is going to the Work Cafeteria so freaking challenging for some folks!!!

  1. I appreciate that you want to take your time picking out the perfect leafs of iceberg. But don't give me the evil eye because I want to skip over you and move on to the next area of the salad bar.
  2. The sign behind the deli clearly indicates the Cheese, Meats, Salads, Breads & Specials - why not use the 15 minutes you've waited in line to decide what you want and NOT when it's your turn!!!
  3. It's a salad line NOT a feeding trough - please hold off on eating your salad until after you've paid for it. That INCLUDES dipping a piece of veggie into the salad to find out what flavor it is - READ THE DAMN LABEL!!!
  4. The Penny Cup is there for those who need or have an extra penny, NOT for you to makeup for the 32cents you're short on your meal. Put back that extra donut - you don't need it!!!
  5. The area with utensils & condiments is not the local social bar. If you don't need this stuff step away so others can get what they need. That's why they put tables in the cafeteria, so you can have conversations while enjoying your lunch!
  6. I know you're anxious to get back to work at your desk, but can you please let folks get off the elevator first before you rush into it? Thanks

Thanks for letting me bitch!!

2. Ugh, number 3 is particularly disgusting, isn't it?
What you mentioned is something I've seen before at the cafeteria at work. I've actually seen people dipping veggies into the dip. It sounds picky, but I don't want someone else's veggies in the communal dip, so to speak. The dips are labelled...you're not misleading people. :-)

4. Quit your crying, it could be much worse....
I work in a tire factory which has a "cafeteria". I went in the other day and it was a choice of chicken livers and rice or chicken fried steak. There was always the option of getting a veggie plate. The choice of "vegtables" was mashed potato's, blackeyed peas, white beans or pea's. Thats three starches and one veggy. Some choice huh?

Over on the Salad "bar" they have a small set-up but the quality is poor. Old lettuce, un-marked dressings, fermenting olives ect....

The last refuge is of course the grill. They keep the burgers on the grill in warm greasy water and they do not taste right. If only they would use real meat......

Yup, we don't have big problems with people being "in the way" at our cafeteria.

5. But there still needs to be some manners
I don't care if it's a cafeteria made for the Queen of England or some poor schmuck stuck working at Walmart - folks need to be a little more curtious when getting meals.

I have no complaints about the contents of my food - just the ignornant people pushing & shoving to get food and using no manners whatsoever.

Even if my cafeteria was your cafeteria (yikes, it does sound bad), I will still hope that people aren't dipping their fingers into the salad bar or standing around blocking others from getting food or any of that other stuff you've mentioned.

6. I agree, I was just ranting myself.
Not any suprise but the only people that bug me is the ones blocking the exit doors at our place!
The same people that irk you at your cafeteria are the ones that block passage in the grocery store, drive slow in the passing lane, play loud thumping music while they pump gas, ect....

Self centered idiots who don't give a rats ass about anyone else. The older I get, the less I take. I am not afraid of speaking out and correcting rude behavior.

9. Same thing with elevators
My job requires me to take elevators and I hate when people start rushing into the elevator without letting other folks get off the elevator first

These are probably the same folks driving humongous SUVs with Flag Stickers all over them

10. I don't understand what's so hard
about letting people off first. It only makes sense and everything works better that way!

12. Happens on subways, too
I've found a way to take advantage of my freakish height, though (I'm 5'13").

I make a point of "checking my watch" as I walk out, putting my elbow right at face-level of the jerks thinking about pushing their way in.

I've never actually whacked someone -- they seem to get the idea and back off.

14. Usually the first question a guy asks me is...
"How tall are you?"

I tell 'em 5'13" and if they can't do the math... well, conversation usually ends pretty quickly after that! :)

15. Ask them what the old IQ is....
Damn, you're standing right in front of them and they ask? I get that alot from people (I am a man). I might even try 4'24" if asked again.

8. think back to kindergarten when they taught you how to stand in line
I can't count the number of times when I've tried to get in line to order, but don't know who is in line and who is just milling around.

11. Jeez, do we work in the same building??
It's amazing, isn't it? The elevator thing makes me crazy.

Then, there are the people who, even though the menu is posted outside AND on the internal website, stand there like morons, unable to decide which entree they want. Pick one, fercrissakes, and get the hell out of the way!

And don't forget the beefs with some of the cafeteria workers. Okay, folks, when you open the door for a meal, you really should have a cashier ready at the end to take people's money right away. Some of us just swoop thru for a soda and a piece of fruit, and when we want to pay. . .no one to take money. Then we have to stand there while you put the money tray in, count your cash, etc. Maddening.
