9. I t hink not.
Although, they used to be a good organization, striving for gun safety. I support the right to have a gun, but I hate today's NRA.

25. Southern Poverty Law Center
The Southern Poverty Law Center is a great organization to help out, they do a lot of extensive legal work to shut down racist groups of all kinds. They have programs for schools to teach to tolerance, and do a lot of great work to teach tolerance. Most recently they were the ones that forced Roy Moore to remove the ten commandments shrine from the court house that made so much in the news. If you want more of the details of what happened in that case, go to their website.

Granted, they don't promote any one particular ethnic group but by keeping things open and fair for all they are helping all the groups.

12. You have to pay dues.
You know, just like any other organization. You can give as much as you want, but there is a minimum of $35, I think.

You can afford it. They do good work.

19. It's funny, kinda.
I was watching the Olympics, and my family (we were all together) noticed that the women athletes wore next to nothing, while the men wore normal shorts and shirts (beach volleyball, but also true in gymnastics, ect). My brother didn't think that was odd, but since I've coaches girls' sports before, I know that there is a difference in clothing (and funding). We argued, and I decided to join NOW.

My thought process continued, and why would I, as a male, join NOW if I wasn't committed enough to join the NAACP as a white guy? After all, I agree with their mission.

One thing led to another, I joined both, and I've never felt better. I'm embarrassed that I've waited so long to join these organizations.

18. Did a special for the undecided voters
Had both dem and repub stratigists there and Paula Zahn was there. It was in Canton. Room filled they said with 75 dems 75 repubs and 75 undecideds. The repub guy was sleezy and did the usual spin doc thing. Our guy seemed nice and tried to make some points. Hard to tell how it went.

21. good groups
Have you joined the Humans Right Campaign (HRC), a GLBT group? Just curious? You said ask anything. :)

I am glad you posted this because there is a misconception in the general population that if you are not a part of the community you cannot join the group (i.e. if you are white you cannot be a member of the NAACP, not a woman, can't be a part of NOW...etc.). If you believe in the mission of the organization, join.

I don't belong to any groups (except DU and the Kerry campaign) because I am unemployed and broke! But, I do diversity training, I have worked for the NAACP in the past ( a former member, and a white guy) and I have worked closely with several women's organizations. If I believe in the mission, have the time (or money), and am welcome, then I join.

I have found that working with communities of which you are not a member, you not only learn much about that group, but about your own group! NOW will not only inform you of women's issues, but the issues of men, as well. It is also a great way to get information about cultures that are often "left out" of history!

Good luck to you!!!

Brightest Blessings!

23. I am a heterosexual male
and I joined a group called "Equality California" which is an organization that fights discrimination against the LGBT community. There are so many different groups I'd like to help. If I ever become wealthy, I'll probably have about 100 groups that I'll donate to!

24. good for you!
I am glad you joined that group! When the majority stands with the minority, change happens more quickly! I also think it says even more that you are a straight man who joined a GLBT group. You are secure in yourself. Don't get me wrong, I love my straight sisters who are apart of the movement, but when a straight brother joins the ranks, it speaks volumes!!! And, like you, if I ever become wealthy, it will soon fade because of the social justice groups I'd join (after paying off mine and my family's debts)!

Brightest Blessings! and THANK YOU!
