"Please save my mother"..

Please save my mother: A kitten watches fire Capt. Levy Davis try to revive its mother at a house fire in In Bowling Green, Ky. The oxygen did the trick, and both cats, along with a third, were taken to the Humane Society.

1. ...where they were promptly euthanized.
Sorry, I was just looking for a happier ending. Winding up at the Humane Society might not really be a step up...

2. For cats & dogs who get their pics in the paper, like this
there are usually lots of people who want to adopt them..

These stiries actually help other animals, because people go down there to try to adopt THEM, and when told they are already spoken for, will adopt a differnt one :)

These are happy endings..

The ones that are not.. are the ones where a family or person "drops off" a pet that's getting up there in years, because they are moving or someone's allergic.. Those are the ones that don't have much hope.

4. Thank you so much, SoCalDem!
What a beautiful post! I am totally choked up, looking at that tiny face. I agree, these are the animals that get adopted. They have the additional value of their fame and a good story.;(

6. Does anyone remember some years ago
Firefighters responded to a house fire (I don't recall where) and after a while one of the firefighters noticed a momma cat going back into the still burning building desperately trying to save her babies inside? That was a heartwrencher. Momma cat went back in 3, 4 or 5 times to save her babies and she was so severely burned over much of her body and still that wasn't enough to stop her from going into that burning building to bring her babies to safety. She was a pitiful sight, around her eyes and her ears were burned so bad nobody thought she had a chance in hell of surviving.

But they tried and some amazing veterinarians saved that momma cat and at least a couple of the babies made it if not all of them. The outpouring of people from all over the country wanting to adopt that momma cat and or her surviving babies was tremendous. Then I remember seeing a follow up on momma cat a year or two later. I think (?) it was the firefighter that rescued her was the one that adopted her. She was badly scarred and much of her burned off fur never grew back and her mangled ears that were burned almost completely off. But she is not only the bravest momma cat in the world, she the luckiest and most cherished.

10. Yay, BGFD!
When I lived in Kansas City, it seemed as though every other night there was a story about firefighters rescuing and reviving companion animals. In fact, the KCFD has small oxygen masks on board specifically to revive animals, and looks as though BGFD does too.

After all the attention that Scarlett, the cat who went into a burning building repeatedly to rescue her kittens, it occured to me that maybe shelter workers might invent colorful backstories for some of their harder-to-place animals. When you get right down to it, most animals are noble and heroic, and who doesn't want a courageous critter?

11. Scarlett :-) That's her name. Thanks Rep
I've never heard of the small oxy masks for critters? That is way cool that some firehouses do that :toast:

I think the 'colorful' stories is a fantastic idea too. It might make people feel that their pet is all the more special and let's face it, people also love to tell and re-tell of amazing survival stories that would make their pet more special than any other pet on the block. And aren't we the lucky ones to have this extra special, one of a kind (so to speak) pet.

I betcha it would work like a charm. I'm mentioning that idea to my local shelter when I go in next and to my vet too. He takes in many 'hard' cases and tries to place them. He won't put them to sleep either so at times I go in his office and there are many kitties of all ages, everywhere. He's such a great vet.

12. Cool!
As I said, most animals are brave and heroic, so it's not exactly lying, either!

My cats saved me from a bug that got in, and every night they make sure I don't roll off the bed (or use too many blankets or too much of the bed...)

13. Aw how wonderful they are.
Taking such good care of their mommy like they do :-)
My kitties, one she makes sure the top of my head and my ears stay warm at night and that the pillow doesn't accidently get knocked off the bed. The other one, her son, doesn't save me from bugs or help with blankets, rather he brings me presents and goodies like birds and rats.
He doesn't want me to starve ;-)
