Canadian tutu man gets five months for Olympic plunge

ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- A tutu-clad Canadian who jumped into the Olympic diving pool after a competition was convicted Wednesday of interrupting the games and sentenced to five months in jail. He was released pending an appeal.

Ron Bensimhon, 31, of Montreal, jumped off the 3-meter springboard at the diving venue Monday night wearing a blue tutu and white tights with polka dots.

What blows me away is that he's gone to court and been sentenced already. Jeebus!!! That would take months here!!

1. Can't keep Canadians out of the water
Perhaps you remember this bit from earlier in the year:

Apparently on a whim, Deirdre Barkhouse, 26, and Analise Spencer, 18, who both live in Niagara Falls, decided the mammoth 43-hectare reservoir -- circled by a huge fence, and a protected source of drinking water -- was too good to pass up on a hot day. So they took the plunge.

That's when they were suddenly over their heads, with the New York Post blaring on its front page: "Central Park Swim Babes Busted."

2. They should have taken the "disorderly conduct" approach
Five months in jail seems a bit harsh for a quick swim. If he didn't actually disrupt a match, let him have his fun, fine him, and maybe keep him locked up overnight.

3. well he did
There were divers about to jump and they had to abort their jump. Also several divers did fail completely after the incident.

Five months is way too harsh, but advertising an internet casino in a country that has banned internet gambling doesn't look too smart. Also he has turned down the offer of an attorney.

5. 5 months is pretty steep.. but he's most likely the example..
.. to anyone else who thinks they may want to try something stupid like that. May also be way he was sentenced so fast.
