Ever get ribbed for being a Liberal by an absolute idiot?
Went to a company party last night and had the misfortunate of sitting next to one of the dumbest and dullest idiots I know... He happened to see the wallpaper I have on my phone, which was a shot I took at a Kerry rally, and surprise... it turns out he's a conservative, dumb, dull idiot.

He sends me this email this morning:

Thought you'd appreciate this!:)

"The Secret Service has announced it is doubling its protection
for John Kerry. You can understand why - with two positions on
every issue, he has twice as many people mad at him." - Jay Leno

-----------------

To which I responded:

Oh hahaha that's so funny. I guess you'll enjoy this then:

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we," Bush said. "They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we."

-----------------

To which he responded:

As a liberal you should understand that he had good intentions with what he said. So he misspoke - I do it all the time.
Mine are called ****isms. You have to look past the words and get to the real meaning.

It's a shame that you and I can't work more closely with each other. I strongly feel with the proper time and coaching you could, in fact see the light, and join the group of goodness and mercy that is the Republican party. Not that I'm necessarily a republican...I'm more of a conservative. The party left me years ago.

Have a lovely day.

-----------------

To which I responded:

Oh lord. That's just about the funniest thing I've read all week. Keep living in your fantasy world, that our country hasn't been nearly destroyed by a greedy, selfish murdering bastard. There's nothing on earth that would make me put on those blinders you seem to have. Have a lovely day yourself.
-----------------

To which he responded (ugh):

We could keep this going all day. We better stop before it gets bloody.

Talk to you later

-----------------

Why do I even bother... now my blood pressure is up. Irritating little shit. Definitely not worth bloodying anything over.

1. Happened to me last wednesday...
And I'd get part of a thought out, and the bastard (A BLACK Republican) wouldn't let me finish, he'd berate me and not let me get a word in edgewise. Fucking pissed me off and he sure felt good about himself, and asked me if I felt guilty about being a liberal now. I said, I only feel guilty about ever thinking you were a good guy. You're a piece of crap who doesn't want to hear anyone else's opinion. You just want to hear part of the story and taunt people. That's ignorance, and I'm really glad I don't work here anymore. No wonder everyone thinks you're an ass. And then I walked out.

2. sure...it gets pointless after awhile...
I love it when they ask me why I hate America.

I always say, "I don't hate America...I love America! I just hate Republicans..."

that usually shuts them up (for about 3 seconds)

chin up...just keep poking em in the eye...after awhile you'll find that not only is it fun...but it's good for you too!

34. I turn the 'hate' thing back onto them.
When asked why I hate America or whatever it is I supposedly hate, I say, 'Humph, are you ever confused. You have just confused my anger for your hatred. It's no wonder you're so lost and disconnected.'

I try and avoid saying I hate anything. Cuz if ya do that's all they'll focus on anyway.....SEE, SEE You admit that you are a hater. :eyes: Idiots they are, but I don't "hate em." ;-)

3. Goodness and mercy? Republicans?
He must be talking about the happy puppy party. I think your friend is confused.

I've found that the hardest part of arguing with conservatives and republicans is that they are usually too proud/stupid to admit that they're wrong. It's hard to argue with a fencepost.

100. I've lost a friend over this BushCo
I always knew he was conservative, but when he started taunting me about supporting Kerry, I asked him how he could seriously support shrub after everything that has happened. This back and forth went on for a few conversations, until one day he said it was too bad that we need the oil in the middle east, otherwise we could just drop a couple of nuclear bombs and wipe out the whole area.

I said, "That's really Christian of you," and he was insulted. He's Catholic. Since then things are polite and stilted between us. He was the best man at our wedding twenty years ago. I'm kicking myself for having been his friend all these years.

8. I usually just "get in their face" with facts....
..like the Nations Debt, employment, jobs created, corporate welfare,
tax breaks for those who are rich and tax loopholes, our standing in the world .....and more.

What usually REALLY gets them is a (partial lie) when I say:
"Why do you vote for someone who is not even half as smart as YOU are?????" (They don't know what to fucking say on THAT one!)

9. I get this all the time from co-workers, and
although I'm very liberal on social issues, I'm not terribly liberal on fiscal issues.

So instead of arguing whether my idea for a top marginal rate for federal tax (49.9%) is better than theirs (33%) or whether their should be an earnings cap on FICA witholding, we argue about social issues, and I was recently called a "naive idiot" for not having the "vision" to realize how much better the world would be if public schools were Catholic schools, if kids wore uniforms (I thought we Dems were supposed to be the the "collectivists who fight against all individuality"), if prayer in school were allowed, if abortion was allowed (gun laws don't work, but abortion laws would?), etc.

Worst of all is that if I had a dollar for every time I have gotten this "ten suggestions to Kerry for a more sensitive war" e-mail, I'd be advocating a tax rate of 49.9% on myself :)

18. Some 6 or 7 months ago, an idiot RW'er in line in the store...
I was in, just started tlaking about how "great" bush is. I didn't ask for this, but felt compelled to ask him, "Can you tell me ONE thing that bush has EVER succeeded at"?

He shut right up, for about 30 seconds, you could have heard a pin drop, and everyone in line was looking at him. He got livid, and said, "Look what he did in Iraq"!

To which I responded, "Yes, look what he did in Iraq, some 600+, (at that time), KIA; some 11,000 PH's awarded; 10's of thousands of innocent Iraqis and Afghans dead and maimed. This is your idea of success? Where are all those WMD's? Where was the threat? Where is Osama?"

He boiled, then just left his cart in the line and left the store. He could not fight the truth...and he knew it. I am sure he will vote for bush in Nov, but I am also sure, he has no reason why; he will vote by rote.

It is sad really...:(

23. A few times this has happened
Where I use to work, being the minority Liberal I took a lot of ribbing about my anti-dim son views. I just smiled, sometimes laughed at what they were saying, but on the inside sometimes I was steamed.

Then I decided such apathy and ignorance wasn't worth my own peace of mind and well being. So rather than argue or 'debate' the issues after they finished regurgitating sound bites I'd look at them with a marveled expression and say something off-the-wall and sarcastic like, 'WOW did you learn that all by yourself from the TEE-VEE? Oh how proud you must be that you have fooled yourself into believing that you're SOOooooo well informed.'

Or I might say, 'My aren't you just the perfect example and proof that they are truly getting their monies worth.' When they ask, who is they I reply with, 'well the Think Tanks of course silly, I thought you said you were informed, you've certainly heard of them? (slight pause, give em a chance to answer. If they stammer with, why uh yea I heard of em- you know their lying) You know the ones that are spending millions upon millions of dollars to bend your brain and form your opinions for you. Like I said, you are living proof they are getting an excellent return on their investment.'

Issues, they don't want to talk about no stinking issues. Besides, I'd rather give a resentment than get one ;-)

25. Same here
I heard how Bush* was a good man and he goes to church and he's good for the economy, blah, blah, blah.

Time for the Hammer of Truth

To that I asked, "What good has Mr. Bush* done for you?"

Reply: He's a good man, he goes to church, blah, blah, blah.

I said, "That's very nice, but what has he done that helps YOU? Your orders are down, you and I know too many laid-off people, the economy stinks. Now answer the question, what the hell has he actually done for YOU?"

Silence. Then, "How 'bout those Braves?"

To be a Bush* supporter, one has to live in a different world.

I am one of the few liberals in my office, and I gave up long ago even talking about things with the others. The two other engineers I work with are all for bush because he is a "Christian" and is pro life. (Except when it comes to anyone that is out of the fetal position).
I know it can really get to you when these people spout their crap, but it's best to just try to let it go.
The only thing I know for sure is that there have been a few people who voted for bush last election and have told me "anybody but bush". That is a good sign and hopefully November will shut the idiots up. But I am sure that when Kerry wins, the morons will spend millions of taxpayer's money on stupid "investigations", they hate to lose and the republican party are filled to the rim with crybabies and spoiled shitheads.

a rabid repuke (he has a picture of George & Laura hanging in his cubicle) that I know of ran into me on Monday as I was leaving work.

We were both walking to the parking garage, I had just left the gym and I still had my minidisc playing (Out on the Tiles by Led Zeppelin just started). He tapped me and then started in on his repuke spiel which I noddingly obliged him with some retort. I managed to switch the subject to music (we do agree on something), but when it got back to politics I just smiled and put my headset back on. I'd rather listen to "Out on the Tiles" than someone spiel repuke crap ESPECIALLY when there doesn't seem to be any chance I'm allowed to debate the issues back.

Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 10:41 AM by Misunderestimator
I didn't get angry, and the blood pressure was exaggeration. I treat people like this guy with the utmost lack of respect and wouldn't waste a drop of civility on them. I can certainly pretend to be civil, but that's not really civil is it?

And silly barbs definitely get me places in life :D

70. "utmost lack of respect"=

dehumanizing behavior?

Just a thought....

I'm by nature a healer, and am going into the fields of nutritional and psychological counseling.

I truly want to help people, and yes that includes republicans. Just like I don't judge people for having mental handicaps, I don't judge people for their skewed political judgement. Some people are just simple-minded, and I can't do anything about it. I would rather not contribute to interpersonal hostility, which leads to violence, which leads one day to war.

I just feel that I have a responsibility for making peace in this world, whenever I can.

Some people make it difficult, but these are my challenges in this life.

I try to know the issues and am able to win the liberal side of most rational debates. Beyond that, when it moves into the realm of insults, I just don't care for it. It does raise MY blood pressure and drains my energy, and it accomplishes nothing.

75. I'm really glad that you can find compassion for these types of people...
I'm just too old to manufacture compassion for people who support a murderer.

And you have completely misinterpreted how I react to these people. I am not a hostile person by any stretch, but I am damn sick and tired of sitting back and listening to idiots, and I'm not planning on stopping arguing with them.

I feel like you're lecturing me, Mara... and I'm not quite getting why.

78. No, not lecturing you @all...

I'm just offering my opinion on the situation. You give yours, I give mine. How conversations work. Am just trying to explain why I feel the way I do, because we seem to have different views on these kinds of exchanges.

I just don't feel like any kind of useless hostility is good for anyone. It's bad for MY health, anyway.

We should definitely argue with idiots and the misled. Some people really CAN be humbled, I have seen it happen a few times. It's very gratifying. I'm always up for an intellectual challenge, but when it gets down to the level of dumb insults, I'm disinterested. No challenge there, just building anger. From insults, the next step is often fists; have seen this happen, too.

But some people are just idiots or stuck in their views, and the best thing we can do is smile and nod at their idiocy, and recognize at some level that they are our human kin, too.

Because for me, (and maybe not for you, if so you are lucky) anger often has led to violence. And that frightens me. So I feel that I have to avoid anger, and try to keep the peace whenever possible, for the sake of protecting my own health and that of others whose views I may disagree with.

Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 10:44 AM by Misunderestimator
I wouldn't... of that I'm sure. No more than I would be civil to Ken Lay, Dick Cheney or any number of other murderers.

74. I don't think a lack of civility will really do us much good...

I would probably feel furious in their presence, but uncivility would only get me arrested, or worse. I would prefer to confront these people, and all people, following the restraints of diplomacy. And one reason for that is because I know that in this manner, I would be sure to come across so much better and smarter, than them.

I really would rather avoid situations which make me angry, and accomplish nothing.

I have a hot temper that I've had to train myself to control. I was charged with assault once, actually. I know where anger leads, and it is no place good. I am afraid of that side of myself, to be honest.

He's part of what I refer to as the "25% crowd". 25% of the population is so enamored and brainwashed by everything and everyone the GOP presents, that they will support them NO MATTER WHAT.

* could be found naked in the White House with a troupe of teenage gypsy sex slaves, performing ritual animal sacrifices with the letter opener once used by Abraham Lincoln, and these 25% would somehow justify it in their puny brains that he was "right in these actions. He's a WAR preznit!"

Then they would somehow denigrate Bill Clinton, for according to these types all evil in the universe eminates from a sphere within 6" of Bill Clinton's naughty bits....

Always remember, never wrestle with a pig. You just get dirty. And the pigs enjoys it more and more the longer it goes on.

Throw facts at him that prove how immoral the actions of his party have been. Don't fall into the condescending moral aspects he's throwing out.

Ask him to give you concrete examples of the 'goodness and mercy' of his party. Then throw out all the crap they've done that have hurt the poor, put the entire planet at risk, etc... etc.. He can't back up goodness and mercy with ANYTHING his party have done.

56. I write for a very, very conservative industry...
...and I am extremely selective about the people with whom I discuss politics. There are maybe three or four people in the industry (outside of my actual workplace, where everybody thinks I'm this leftist whacko) who know more than just I'm a Democrat, and really not that many who know that I'm even that.

Sometimes, though, at conventions, people bring up politics, and I try my best to diplomatically shut them down without overstepping my bounds. These people vote their business -- and their chamber of commerce tells them to vote Bush. They don't vote their children or their parents or their freedom, though.

Does this idiot at work know that you're one of those people who want to ruin his marriage, Misunderestimator? ;-) (And, if he is, does he try to talk to you about it?)

71. the bogus Churchill quote
and they always toss out that bogus Churchhill quote "anyone who isnt a liberal at 20 has no heart, anyone still a liberal at 40 has no brain." I always point out that the quote is ACTUALLY from Georges Clemenceau who actually said "Anyone who is not a Communist when they are young has no heart, anyone still a communist when they are no longer young has no head." Besides, Churchill supported programs such as the government building housing for the working class that would send American RWingers into a tizzy.

"OK lady, the gloves are off! I tried to cease and desist, but obviously you are itching for a fight. That's ok, I'll oblige If it gets too brutal, i.e. you are too small to handle it, let me know, I'll let you crawl off into a corner. Otherwise get ready for the barrage is about to begin!

May the best man, or woman win!"

You inciteful person you... now look what you've done. :D

I wrote back this:

"Nah.... I don't have the impulse to fight someone who cannot be persuaded to see the obvious truth. I suppose you're against gay marriage too?"

On edit... here's his reply:

"That's funny, I was thinking the same thing about you. If you really want to have a civil discussion about politics I would love to. Although neither of us is about to change our stance on issues, I'm always open to hear how others think.

Take care"

TOO FUNNY... Yeah! He thinks I'm not civil... cool... maybe he'll leave me alone now. :)

I work in an area where there isn't ONE Bush supporter among us. Half of the group comes from various other countries, and their opinion of the commando in cheese is about the same as that of bread mold under a refrigerator.

I tell these morans on the other boards - show me some core facts. WHAT has he done for the working class, the poor, schools, housing, minorities, the military, veterans, etc? WHAT has he done for people who aren't his financiers?

Closer to home . . . my own sister-in-law cannot get married and probably will never be able to. This is the sort of thing Rethugs are worried about - preserving some misinterpreted dogma that poses no threat to any person or their ideals.

101. I recently forwarded to a '50s music Usenet group a G.D. posting...
Edited on Wed Aug-18-04 10:46 PM by NightTrain
...about Pat Boone's recent claim that God gave him "Ain't That A Shame?" and "Tutti Frutti" to record in 1955.

I added:

"No, asshole, it wasn’t God. You were 'given' those songs when YOU FUCKING STOLE THEM from Fats Domino and Little Richard!

"Pat Boone is the Antichrist of rock 'n' roll. He has been a carbunkle on the ass of my favorite music for 50 goddamned years. I hate that lying, white-bread, Bible-thumping motherfucker with every fiber of my being!"

Boy, did that ignite a shitstorm! As of this writing, my Usenet thread has close to 300 posts. One of the more recent ones stated:

"Obviously nobody around here agrees with Dean's crazy radical views about Boone."

To which I replied:

"I love being called 'crazy' and 'radical' by a man who thinks the entire planet revolves around '50s music.

"Of course, I've been called far worse things by people even more ignorant and self-absorbed than you--not to mention by the handful of trolls who comprise the douche-bag contingent of this NG."

To see the full thread, go to rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s and look for the thread titled, "Pat Boone claims that God gave him 'Ain't That A Shame?' and 'Tutti Frutti' to record."
