How do I make a backup copy of Windows 98
If I copy to a CD, will it be functional, or
is there more to it?

I don't recall any copy protection on the Win98 ISO's or the Win98se ISO's

5. Also.... for convenience sake.....
you can copy the win98 folder to your hard drive... and when it asks you to insert the CD whilst you are adding hardware, fiddling with your network settings... etc... just point it (browse to) the folder and it will be happy. This will save you from having to get the CD everytime the OS gets lonely for something or other. I used to partition my drives into two pieces so that "if" something bad happened.. like the entire drive needed formatting... the second partition the "D" partition could hold data that I didn't want to lose....

Some OEM versions of Windows puts a copy of the windows cab folder somewhere on the drive.. cuz I have noticed that on many machines such as HP, Compaq and others that the system immediately notifies you that it is downloading from say Win98SE CDROM.... but in actuality it is feeding from a folder on the drive somewhere.

7. There was a time
when copying the Win98 directory off the CD to the Hard Drive was an advantage... cuz... it was much faster to install off the drive... don't know if that is still true today with today's CDRoms... but I would think it is still true as hard drives have also increased in their MBit IO capabilities. What you would do is use your boot floppy... to get to your A: prompt... CD to your D drive.. CD to your Win98se Directory.... then type setup <enter> and it will carry you through the complete install.

Another thing is if you partition your drive into two pieces.. do your windows install... put in your fave software... and use Norton Ghost to image your drive to the D drive.... you can reinstall windows in a few minutes WITH ALL of your software intact as it was the DAY you made the ghost image.
