9. did you see the first Divas concert? . . .

(don't recall if it was VH1 or MTV) . . . Celine was one of six (I think) "divas" who shared the stage to theoretically wow the audience . . . the others included Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Carole King, someone else, and . . . Aretha! . . .

long story short, by the time the concert ended, it could have been renamed "Aretha and Her Five Backup Singers" . . . she blew them all out of the water, and at times it was actually painful to watch . . . Celine almost busted a gut trying to be "soulful" while singing with Aretha, and then stood back while The Queen did her incomparable thing with seemingly no effort whatsoever . . . I felt embarrassed for her and for the others, all of whom are certainly okay singers (and, in Carole King's case, an exceptional songwriter) . . . but they just got their asses handed to them on that particular night . . .

my own opinion of Celine is that she is indeed an okay singer who does material that I just don't care for . . . and when she tries to go outside her genre (e.g. tries to sing R&B), she just plain sucks . . . sorry . . .

is a phenomenon. Putting her on the stage with ANYONE is unfair, even now, when age has taken its toll on her high notes.

She's one of those few people who go beyond singing. Something mystical happens when she opens her mouth, and the angels celebrate.

No one's ever gonna say seriously that there's anything wrong with Carey or Twain-- they have marvelous voices. And Celine's voice is damn good when she stays with what she does best.

But Aretha, man, she just grabs you and don't let go.

It's what they mean by "soul."
