Which Cities Would You Like To Host An Olympics

Summer Games

In the US: San Francisco and Chicago. I think that SF is the most scenic city in the country, while Chicago probably tells the 'American story' the best, plus the idea of having sailing on Lake Michigan really appeals to me.

I also think Toronto would put on a great show. Plus the way they got screwed over for a country that proudly shoots it's own people with tanks in full international view (PRC and the Beijing 2008 Games; to make it worse, China's also bidding for the 2014 Winter Games in Harbin).

If the IOC were ever to award the games to an African city, I think Cape Town would be spectacular, and the Australians put on such a fabulous show with Sydney, so I'd pull for Perth, Brisbane, or Melbourne to hold one. Plus the thought of beach volleyball in site of the Eiffel Tower sounds neat, so Paris would be a good choice.

Winter Games

From US cities, I think Denver should bid again (Yes I know that they gave up the '76 games because of NIMBYs). I think they'd do a fabulous job.

I'd also like to see a Winter Games from below the equator, so either Christchurch, New Zealand or Santiago, Chile would be cool. Finally, I think that the idea of a games at the Pyongchang, South Korea site might be a really neat idea to try to bring the two Koreas together.

2. CHICAGO!
I live here. :)

It's a great city, we would treat the international crowd so well! And we have people and neighborhoods in the city who represent almost every ethnic group on the PLANET.

3. San Francisco, first
I'm very disappointed they didn't get the '12 bid.

Auckland would also be great, but it may be too small to host well, but it was the most beautiful and nicest city I've ever been in.

Toronto would also be a great summer-games site.

7. I have a feeling....
that the US did not put up SF because they knew that whatever the US candidate was, it was going to probably lose (badly) to Paris, London, or Madrid, which are percieved as the frontrunners for the 2012s.

When the 2016s come around the general line of thought is that the games will almost certainly be back here, having been 20 years between the Atlanta games of 1996 and the 2016 Games. With that in mind, San Francisco will likely be the US bid city. However, my bet is that Toronto will run again as a Canadian bid city. Finally, I'd expect Cape Town to be in the mix as well.

12. Yes
Capetown would be a great choice. It's just always tricky to deal with the Southern Hemisphere, but of course it can be done.

Personally, I think the US has had too many Olympics. In the last 25 years alone, we've had LA, Atlanta, Lake Placid, and Salt Lake City.

That's excessive. There NEEDS to be an African games in the near future.

15. Unfortunately
there are few, if any, countries in South America (or Africa, for that matter) that could adequately host the games.

After Athens, it's even going to get worse. Athens will lose a bunch on the games, and Beijing... well... who knows? I don't think the Olympics have been profitable in awhile, and third-world countries simply cannot afford to build all the necessary infrastructure.

From what I've been hearing, it's almost always a money losing proposition and lately the security hassles make the place unliveable for the residents.

34. Also, the Winter Games are not as daunting as the Summer
There are not as many sports or venues. There is a chance of breaking even, or even making some money.

I'm looking forward to the games here. Vancouver does a great job hosting events. We have excellent volunteers here.

20. I don't want Chicago to host them. Do you know how much this costs?
How many BILLIONS it will cost to host the Olympics?

Sorry, but the money it would take to host the Olympics can be better used elsewhere (like education, for instance?)

24. Definitely Chicago
They wouldn't even have to build many venues - just use Soldier Field, Wrigley, Lake Michigan, stuff at Northwestern and DePaul, and so on.

Internationally, I'd like to see a Games in Berlin not involving Nazis. Other cities that would be neat (and that might be able to afford it all) are Hong Kong, Tokyo, or Toronto.

Pyongyang is in North Korea, and they will never be held there, though your ideas for the Winter Olympics are good. I personally think they should be held up in the U.P., maybe Traverse.

28. No way Chicago
First, the Olympics are for second-rate cities trying to make it. Chicago is already there.

Second, do we really need another way to feed money into the pockets of Daley's friends? The Chicago municipal budget functions nicely for that purpose, thankyouverymuch.

Third, Chicago and Illinois are corrupt enough already. The Olympics is possibly the only thing more corrupt than Illinois politics.

Fourth, who needs it? Chicago is not exactly failing as is.

Fifth, the Cubs and White Sox will have to leave town for the duration. I do not want a two week road trip in the middle of a pennant race. Plus, Bears preseason is going on and that must not be interrupted.

Sixth, where the F are you going to put the main stadium? Track and field stadiums are really bad for other sports. (Track means stands are too far from the field and you can't hear the pops in football and we all know how well Olympic stadium in Montreal works for baseball - it sucks balls). They are not going to have it up at Northwestern and there is no other football in Chicago.

Seventh, we just built a football stadium. For HUGE money. A track will not fit.

Keep the Olympics in cow towns like Atlanta. We have a metropolis to run.

j/k.

Actually I'd like to see Rio or Amsterdam host the games, because I really want to visit those two cities and I really want to go to an Olympics once. I could do both at once.

But I know those two cities will probably never get the Olympics.

41. Boston would wig out if they ever hosted an Olympics
They thought the world was coming to an end when the DNC was in town, and that's nothing compared to an Olympics.

I'd vote Toronto, as I just got back from a week there and really liked it. I'd also like to see one in Africa (Cape Town perhaps) or the former Eastern Bloc (St. Petersburg and Prague come to mind) or even South America (Buenos Aires? Rio?).

I hope to God NY doesn't get it in 2012. The jingoism will just be so awful, plus NYC has no money anyway.

40. Melbourne hosted the 1956 Olympics
It made a bid for the 1996 Olympic Games but lost out to Atlanta. I think that the fact that the Olympics were held in Australia so recently will probably disqualify any Australian city from hosting the games until at least 2020. Although the United States hosted its second Olympic Games in Atlanta twelve years after it hosted the LA games, Athens had to wait 108 years before the games were held there a second time.

Unfortunately Singapore is too small to host the Olympic Games -because it does a wonderful job of putting on a show for ceremonies and events.

Toronto should bid again IMO. It deserves to host it at least once and it's a nice environment to hold the games. I would consider that Chicago and San Francisco are excellent venues but I also think that New York should have an opportunity as well (I know that it is bidding for the 2012 games).
