Anyone here ever take Soma?
It's a muscle relaxant - they gave it to me for my bulging disk and pinched siatica - but right now I feel higher than I ever have before....wheeeeeeeeeee

Should I worry? Should I try to spell big words? Or should I find a nice bed and watch Leave it to Beaver?

And I didn't knwo there was a real drug called that. Strange, since it was protraid as such a will-to-do-anything killer in the book.

5. I say the Beave or DU are the best options
They gave me two of something similar to those the last time I was in the hospital for mental illness. They knocked me right the fuck out. They had to transfer me to another hospital and I don't remember getting on the gurney or the ambulance ride over there. Whatever you do, don't drive anywhere.

21. Soma
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 03:34 PM by jukes
as you are considering it, is a legendary intoxicant from early Indian history. it is mentioned as a drink, def not alcohol. some think it was a muscarine tea, but there's little evidence to gleen from.

"soma" is also a trade name of the drug carispodal, a muscle relaxant w/euphoric/hypnotic properties.

8. This reminds me of a classic SNL sketch.
Walter Cronkite: Thank you, Mr. President, ha ha! Our next call is Peter Elkin of Westbrook, Oregon, whom I am told is 17 years of age.

Peter (on phone): Hello? Hello?

President Jimmy Carter: Yes. Hello, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Is this the President?

President Jimmy Carter: Yes, it is.

Walter Cronkite: Do you have a question for the President?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I, uh.. I took some acid.. I'm afraid to leave my apartment, and I can't wear any clothes.. and the ceiling is dripping, and uh.. I, uh..

Walter Cronkite: Well, thank you very much for calling, sir..

President Jimmy Carter: Just a minute, Walter, this guy's in trouble. I think I better try to talk him down. Peter?

Peter (on phone): Yeah..?

President Jimmy Carter: Peter, what did the acid look like?

Peter (on phone): They were these little orange pills.

President Jimmy Carter: Were they barrel shaped?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. yes.

President Jimmy Carter: Okay, right, you did some orange sunshine, Peter.

Peter (on phone): Very good of you to know that, sir.

President Jimmy Carter: How long ago did you take it, Peter?

Peter (on phone): Uh.. I don't know. I can't read my watch.

President Jimmy Carter: Alright, Peter, just listen. Everything is going to be fine. You're very high right now. You will probably be that way for about five more hours. Try taking some vitamin B complex, vitamin C complex.. if you have a beer, go ahead and drink it..

Peter (on phone): Okay..

President Jimmy Carter: Just remember you're a living organism on this planet, and you're very safe. You've just taken a heavy drug. Relax, stay inside and listen to some music, Okay? Do you have any Allman Brothers?

Peter (on phone): Yes, I do, sir. Everything is okay, huh Jimmy?

President Jimmy Carter: It sure is, Peter. You know, I'm against drug use myself, but I'm not going to lay that on you right now. Just mellow out the best you can, okay?

Peter (on phone): Okay..!

President Jimmy Carter: Okay.

Walter Cronkite: Well, thank you, Mr. President.

9. Alpha children wear grey.
They work much harder than we do, because they're so frightfully clever. I'm awfully glad I'm a Beta, because I don't work so hard. And then we are much better than the Gammas and Deltas. Gammas are stupid. They all wear green, and Delta children wear khaki. Oh no, I don't want to play with Delta children. And Epsilons are still worse. They're too stupid to be able to read or write. Besides they wear black, which is such a beastly colour. I'm so glad I'm a Beta.

11. I've taken it
Don't drive. Stay home, in bed, watching Leave It To Beaver, as you've said. Don't drive. Don't take more than your prescribed dosage, or freaky side-effects will occur (I did once, my legs went numb/tingly). Don't drive. Don't drink ANY alcohol while you're taking it. And have I mentioned- don't drive? (:))

It is a good, very helpful drug. But you have to "follow the directions" very carefully.

...I mean, I'm sorry that you were experiencing enough pain to warrant the 'legitimate' use of the drug, but there's a part of me that would really like access to your stash! =)

15. Have fun!
I've taken Soma off and on for years for sciatica and neck problems. The first few times I ever took it, it pretty much rendered me unconscious. After that stopped, I'd be completely wrecked when I took it. These days, though, it doesn't have much of a wheeeeee! effect unless I take it on an empty stomach - and even then that only lasts about fifteen minutes. Which is a good thing, really - it's the only muscle relaxer I can take and still function.

A doctor tried switching me to Flexeril a few weeks ago because the Soma wasn't working so well anymore - it made me so stupid that I caught myself washing my hands with toothpaste!

18. Sorry to hear about your bulging disk and pinched sciatica
I've been living with the same problems for 10 years. While the Soma may help now, in the long run this drug will become useless as it, perhaps, will cause other, severe problems.

The BEST way to relieve pain from a pinched sciatica is to lay on your back, draw your knees toward your chest leaving your thighs perpendicular to the ground, then have someone use their bodyweight to push down on your knees/legs - they can almost lay across your shins while putting most of their weight on the knees. This will open of the pinched area and immediate relief will result if done properly.

25. don't drive , yet
I'm a pharmacist, and although I haven't practiced in the community in a while, I will tell you that dizziness, drowsiness, and a general "high" feeling are fairly common with people taking carisprodol. (It therefore has some potential for abuse.) Not everyone has a major problem with it; and depending on how long you will be taking it, your body might get used to it. But for now, my advice is to take it easy until you're comfortable with how it affects you.
