When was the last time you showed a random act of kindness???
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 11:02 AM by samplegirl
Last night when reading in D.U. I was reading a post from a guy who
donated to the first 4 people who posted to become a member who couldnt afford to donate. I'll I could think about was .....wow
sure would like to have a neighbor just like him. He'd get a nice
big apple pie from me.

After a week of people refusing to let you out in traffic or giving me a dirty look for my Kerry button, or someone worrying about where you post and how often.
"This guys post put a smile on my face."

Im fairly new to D.U. so just havent really gotten around to donating.
Fortunately not because I cant afford to donate.

When signing in this morning I nocticed a star by my name and I realized who was responsible...and just how lucky i really am. So with this
feeling of "good" I would like to "Pay it forward" to the first
4 people to post to this.............look for a yellow star and
may your world shine as bright as mine this morning!

Fellow D.U.ers. you can call me Betts

1. A couple of days ago I was in downtown LA
and a young man asked me if I could buy him some soup at the local Subway. I said no, but then I realized that it is money that I never give to people that panhandle, but I ALWAYS offer food if I have it(mostly I get rejected on the food offer)...so I slapped myself in the head and told him to come over to me and I bought him soup and a sandwich and I was really embarrassed for initially saying no.

2. You are such a great person....
I don't know if I would have done that in the same situation. That's great.

13. You know what really compelled me to do it?
It was the way he reacted when I said no. I have conditioned myself not to give money because I cannot give money if it is not for food. When I toild him no, he punched his hand - but not out of anger - more like an "Oh shucks I really thought this guy would help me." He seemed like a genuine and decent guy that really wanted to work and fell on some hard times, so I felt obligated to help him.

15. If a kid comes up to me and asks me for food...
I'd probably take him home with me. Dangerous, I know, but it's my curse. I just love kids. I'd have bought him lunch and sat with him and learned his story. And I have a bullshit meter after working with deliquents, so I can tell a contrived story. God, I hate it that children in this world go hungry so Bush can piss in a golden toilet. :grr:

3. Good for you!

There was this homeless guy on Vermont Ave. in LA pushing a shopping cart full of his life. I was leaving Vons and drove across the street to Burger King and bought like 5 cheeseburgers and drove back to the spot behind Vons where he was setting up camp and gave him the bag. He grunted incoherently, but I'm sure he appreciated it.

Anyway, not just replying to get your donation, I just like the tone of your message. I'll be donating myself this time around (just lost my star recently). Good luck and thanks for the gesture.

Keep up the kindness!
Scott

11. As far as I know they're only good for a year...aren't they?
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:55 AM by UCLA02
'Cause I used to have one for just over a year, then it disappeared.

Any light to be shed? I'm sure there's a thread on this rule somewhere...

7. Betts
I was HIGHLY blown away by his generosity, not only of money but of spirit.

If you read that thread you saw that I commended him on what he was doing and someone gave ME a star!!!! They have remained anonymous (I have my suspicion, though!) and so I decided this Thursday, when I get paid, I am paying $20 for someone's star. Or four peoples' stars. Have to check into how that works. I guess $5 is a minimum for a star? If so I can do four people. THAT sounded bad. Anywho.

It WAS really inspiring, I agree. DUers are some of the best people in the world, of that I have no doubt.

8. About a month ago...
Edited on Mon Aug-16-04 10:52 AM by slutticus
...I was driving to a baseball game here in Houston (to watch it with some fellow DUers!) and it was pouring rain. I was stopped at an intersection near my home, and I noticed a homeless man in the rain trying to keep himself dry with a small piece of cardboard. I felt really bad...so I rolled down my window and gave the guy my (only) umbrella.

Needless to say, I got pretty soaked that day (and every rainy day since then!), but I have no regrets.

On Edit: I don't need a star... (I should read the entire post before I reply!!!) I'll donate myself soon.....Save it for someone who really can't afford it! Thanks anyway!
