A DAY IN THE LOUNGE - MONDAY, LABOR DAY, SEPTEMBER 01, 2003

Welcome Everybody to Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad where we meet, greet and jump start the week ahead. Today, Labor Day, I am serving Strawberry Short Cake. I have tested this recipe and it is very very good. To compliment your Strawberry Short Cake I am serving iced ruby red Shri Tea. It is a wonderful cool drink, brews up ruby red in the glass.

OK, grab your goodies and let's check out the Undergroundrailroad.

THE SILENCE OF HUMANITY. The enigma of that "silence" was Reconstruction and Jim-Crow. It was a painstakingly ugly silence that brought about inequality for the Negro worker and "manhood" for the African-American male. When Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation Act in 1863, the United States made few provisions for the future employment of freed slaves.

Enter Chicago industrialist George Pullman. George Pullman revolutionized rail travel with his famous Pullman Cars. The Pullman Cars were equipped with elegant dining rooms, comfortable sleeping quarters and George. "George" was the Pullman porter, a glorified bellhop, that was considered another piece of "equipment" on Pullman's accounting records. They were named "George" after founder, George Pullman and the porter's position was inherited from slavery. Legal equality achieved in 1865 did not erase the image of black people as moral inferiors which had been stamped on the consciousness of white America through years of slavery. There was a conscious link between the black male and his white employer in a master-servant narrative. But to the unemployed black male it looked great! It offered a steady income and opportunity to travel across America in a position free of heavy physical labor. The Porters were good looking, clean and immaculate in their dress with a snappy, polite manner to match. It was a prestigious position for it's time. Yet, no matter how good looking, polite or efficient they were in their jobs as porters, the legacy of slavery could not be erased in the minds of so many. Soon the Porters were mistreated. They were underpaid, overworked and subjected to countless indignities while working, like being called "George" the name of their employer as opposed to being called by their real names. The company expected the men to pay for their own meals, uniforms, shoes, shoe polish, and only allowed them very short naps in the smoking car. They demanded that the Porters work 400 hours a months or 11,000 miles, sometimes working 20 plus hours in one day. Disgruntled Porters began to question their situation and to their credit, the largest rise of protest politics began in Black American.

In 1925, the porters formed a union called The Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. This marked the beginning of a twelve-year struggle for dignity, better working conditions, and fair pay. (Its leaders were charismatic black activist A. Philip Randolph and former porter Milton Webster, head of the Chicago union local.) Their eventual triumph marked the first time in American history that a black union forced a powerful corporation to the negotiating table. It was a significant step forward for black equality.

The union members learned how to organize and negotiate. They discovered that even in a time of great prejudice in America, blacks could effect change if they stood together and persevered. They would later apply these techniques to the civil rights movement.

Is it in the shop? I missed it !

OK, OH, BTW, Breeders Cup ;-)

Now, today your having brunch with a friend, then looking at furniture. For dinner it's grilled center cut bonless pork chops for dinner! Yummy!!

Oh my, for the LOVE of HBO and DVD. If you don't catch a movie in it's first 3 weeks it's gone.

You have done rail travel and you liked it. Cool.

Enjoy your day, get that golf cart fixed, and enjoy the chops!

Love ya,

Mina

Allowing myself a few minutes to type a message and stare at the rolling golf cart. I don't know why, but this is one of the most interesting graphics on DU.

OK, I think I'm all done. Monday Golf Cart "fix" is complete (usally about 5 trips arounds).

Love,

Mina

39. I thought about flying out for the BC...
...I could have gotten tickets easily out front. Plus, I could have seen all the SoCal DUers. But, I'm saving up for moving into a new apartment in Nov. So, I am going to be a good boy and watch on TV. Plus, BC 2004 is at Lone Star Park in Dallas - right up the road! :D

2. Hi ugrr
:hi:
1. Plans for today=looking for a place to live with a fairly descent price.
2. Can't recall any movies at the moment
3. Use to ride Amtrak all the time as a kid. Had a blast. Rode it as a grown-up all the way to California from Houston with my 2 young boys, that was a trip in itself. Met some real friendly people in my travels.

Have a great Labor Day everyone!

7. Hey, FOX FOX. What's up today?
Thanks for stopping in to say hello to me.

OK, let's check you out on this 2003 Labor Day Holiday.

Your plans today are looking for a new place to live. Question, are you still in NC? If so, I can send you a few links. Drop me a pm Foxy.

No summer movies for you. HBO and DVD's ROCK !

Now, I like your response here. You have traveled via AMTRAK and you liked it. Also, as an adult you traveled from Houston to CA. I have to agree with you Foxy, during my AMTRAK travels, I used to meet great people. We would stay up ALL night and play cards. It was really a lot of fun.

Have a great Labor Day Foxy!

9. Hello Just the Facts (I like your graphic with the sign!)
Hey, thanks for dropping in to say hello!

SO, we're having rump roast with potatoes, carrots and pearl onions. Could you send me a cyber plate, please? It sounds good and yes, the shortcake would round the meal out nice.

OK, Summer movies. Saw T3 and you gave it a  Don't feel bad about not being a frequent movie visitor. Most of us would rather be here, at DU, working hard to get that selected person, *, OUTTA the house, you know the one.

You like road travel. So do I. I heard that AMTRAK is in need of funding. People do not travel by train now. It's a sign of our times. The train, as we know it, is badly in need of an upgrade. If your want to try an adventure in traveling, it would be a fun adventure. But it requires time, something that most of us do NOT have a lot of.

Thanks Just the Facts for dropping in the Undergroundrailroad to say hello.

See you soon!

5. Hi, Mina! So good to hear from you!

1. No real plans--catch up on housework and be with the family.

2. Legally Blonde 2--thumbs way, way down; though I loved the first one (as you well know!)

I've always wanted to travel by rail, but may never get the chance. See, hubby's from India, where train travel is overcrowded and dangerous as hell. He won't even think about it. Still, may take one sometime to see some family n the Bay area.

MMMMMM, strawberry shortcake; perfect end of summer treat. I'll just have to do that housework extra, extra, fast with a walk around the block besides! ;-)

Edit: btw, love the Pullman museum site. I've sent the URL to the library's Electronic Resources Committee for possible inclusion in our "recommended" website file. Thanks for the link--beautifully done site.

Thanks for stopping in to say hello today. How are you doing?

OK, let's check out your responses:

Your plans today are loose, catching up on housework (me too!) and spending time with your family. Sounds great!
Your summer movie, Legally Blonde 2 and you give it? A  WAY DOWN. Well, as they say, I'll catch it on the DVD rebound. Actually I did not even see the first one.

Thanks for giving the Pullman Museum Site a look see. Visually, it is a beautiful web site and there is so much information. Thanks for your support of the site. Excellent Blondeatlast :)

8. Happy Labor Day, Undergroundrailroad!
Thanks for the strawberry shortcake and the tea. An excellent combination.

Answers:

1. I don't have any plans for Labor Day except sitting here and hanging out with my fellow DUers.

2. The only movies I've seen this summer is Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling for Columbine" which just came out on video. I give that a big  And I also saw the "The Incredible Hulk". I give that one a , too, just based on the special effects alone.

3. The only train I've ridden on is a miniature train amusement park ride when I was a little kid. From what I remember, it was fun. Does that count?

10. thanks
for the enlightening piece!
1.) My plans for today are to clean my house, go through my papers and prepare for a new school year.
2.) Finally rented and saw "Bowling for Columbine" --- awesome and sobering.
3.) I went from Albany, NY to Chicago by train about 20 years ago and had one of those mini-sleepers...it was good, I was pregnant and couldn't drive or fly.
Also, when I was a child in the late 1950s, I went from NYC to Binghamton, NY many times on a beautiful silver art deco train called the "Phoebe Snow" (yes, that is the name of a singer, too, she took it from the train). Maybe there were porters, I don't remember.
But I LOVED that train!
One of my more intense memories was being on the Phoebe Snow and having a chain gang board. They were on their way from NYC to the prison in Elmira.
Dressed in gray, shackled at the ankles and handcuffed, a guard with a shotgun in front and back of the line.
It really frightened me that people were being treated like that, even though they were "bad men" as my mother put it.
Was that the start of my liberalism?

25. LuLu550 Welcome to Monday's 'IN' The UGRR!

Welcome to the Undergroundrailroad where we meet, greet, answer questions de jour and jump start/kick-off the week ahead!

Also, thank you for the compliments. I appreciate those very very much.

Now, let me check your responses to our questions today:

Today your preparing for back to school! Actually today IS the day to do that. Purchasing clothing, school supplies, back packs and books. Are you a teacher? If so, I know the pre-planning that must be done for the classroom. My Mom is a retired school teacher and every year we had to help her with the supplies and her papers.

You also saw and like  BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE ! Great!!

Now, regarding you train travels, you pose very interesting insights and trivia. Yes, I am familiar with the singer, Phoebe Snow. But I *NEVER* knew that she took that name as her professional singing name. WOW! And the train, a sleek silver art deco train.

I was able to find a picture of The Phoebe Snow :

Once again, thank you for visiting the Undergroundrailroad and providing your comments.

See you soon!

How's my DU mommy doing? Hope you enjoy your Labor Day!

1. What are your labor day plans?

Later I'm going out to eat with some friends.

2. Did you see any Summer Movies? If so, rate the movie !

I rented a bunch of films but I didn't go to the movies this summer.

3. Have you ever traveled by rail, Amtrack? What was your experience?

I took Amtrack once, from Boston to Philly and back. My experience was great. I talked the ticket guy into letting me use two discounts so I was able to get my tickets for cheap :D. On the way back I sat next to a woman from Spain and we spent the whole time talking about the "liberal" media, how much Bush sucks, what people in Spain and the rest of Europe think of him, and books we love.

40. I love The Cheese Cake Factory.
I've never had a bad piece of cheesecake there but my favorite is the Tiramisu. The rest of their food is good too. I use to work in a mall that had a Cheese Cake Factory so of course I ate there often. My boss and I really didn't like each other so every time she wanted me to do something special for her like get an extra six credit card applications so she'd meet her goal I'd make her bribe me with a meal there.

I'm doing fine. Glad to hear you had some fun!

And Happy Labor Day!:hi:

We have no plans for today, except to finish cleaning the basement, & then we're taking off for South Sioux City, NE, so my husband can pick up a truck.

We've seen no movies this summer--we always wait for the ones we want to see to come out on video. What can I say, we're cheap.;-)

I have never travelled on a train, except for many years ago on a school field trip. I think I'd like it, though, as I love to stare out the window at the scenery.

31. Hi AnnabelLee. Thanks for dropping in! Happy Labor Day!
Your welcome AL and thank you for your comments!

You know I do think you would enjoy the train. You have an opportunity to view beautiful scenery and when the train stops, you have an opportunity to step on the land for a brief moments and look around. I do remember the Pullman Porters and was familiar with their plight.

OK, now let me check out your responses to our questions:

1. You and Hubby are going to pick up a truck. I have always wanted to go to Sioux City AL. I don't know anyone who lives there and business never took me to Sioux City. I have seen pictures and NE looks like a beautiful place to live. Good luck with the truck.

2. Lots of people wait until the movies arrive on video or DVD, me included. Some movies are *must see*. I remember when ALI arrived at the movies, I wanted to see that on opening day. Also, SEA BISCUIT and GANGS OF NEW YORK . Every once in a while, I receive screening tickets and I will attend those. But believe me, the movie industry counts on the rentals or purchase of movies. So that money counts just as much.

3. I see you have an interest in train travel. Why not take a virtual train trip?.

Thanks for dropping in to say hello AnnabelLee. Have a great week!

17. Hi Mina! Happy Labor Day to You!
I'll take that Strawberry Shortcake! Looks good!

Thank you for the article on the Pullman Porters. In my time I actually traveled in a Pullman car and yes, I do remember the exquisite manner of the Porters. Very helpful and very professional. What an accomplishment in putting together the first black union!

Mina, this is a very nice tribute to them on Labor Day.

Now the questions:

1. Church Picnic, then my sister's home for dinner.

2. My daughter purchased a DVD documentary about the Motown musicians. They were called the "FUNK BROTHERS". I give it a

3. Yes, traveled all over the country on the "rails".

Have a great Holiday Mina and thanks for a great daily. Happy Holidays DU!

Oh, you like that Strawberry Shortcake! Yummy!

I'm glad you enjoyed the article on the Pullman Porters. It is quite appropriate for Labor Day and I wanted to do something to honor their activism.

So, it's a picnic for you today and then Dinner at your Sister's home. Sounds nice.

The name of the documentary you saw was STANDING IN THE SHADOWS . Yes, I have seen it and it is an excellent documentary of the FUNK BROTHERS and their experience at MOTOWN RECORDS in Detroit. You gave it a  and I agree 100%.

I see you have traveled the rails.

Have a great evening and enjoy the rest of your week!

18. Hey Mina! Great GREAT Daily today!
WOW! That strawberry shortcake looks great! Now I need it for REAL!!

I'm glad you gave the Pullman Porters a proper shout out on Labor Day.
I traveled once on the Amtrak train. I traveled from Chicago to Detroit. I really enjoyed it. Met a few people in the lounge car and we started up a card game, had a few beers, and talked. Now, I need to travel faster, and actually there should be some sort of technology to make them go faster.

I am just staying home and resting today. No BBQ today. Just burgers.
I saw BadBoys2 and it was da bomb.

Have a good day Mina and DU.

34. Hi BJ! Happy Labor Day!!

WOW! Thanks BJ, for those "great" compliments. They are VERY much appreciated!

SO you like that Strawberry Short Cake ! I wish all of this was real because it would be dessert for everybody!

I'm glad you liked the piece on the Pullman Porters and yes, I thought it was an appropriate tribute on Labor Day.

Now, let me check you out BJ.

Your day today, Labor Day, was chilling out at home. Burgers on the menu tonight! Love burgers!!
AND you saw the movie that UGRR endorsed all summer long, BAD BOYS 2 . You've gotta LOVE that Hummer action!

Once again, thanks for your comments and have a great rest of your week.

Love ya BJ,

36. Hello Proud Patriot (PP!) Thanks for stopping in to say hello!

Now, the fast track to the questions:

1, Haha, that is funny. I had to *think* for a moment, and then I got it! TO NOT TOIL, I agree :)

2. And another vote for Bowling For Columbine !. The most popular Summer movie at The Democratic Underground !

3. No rail travel. Below is a train in Japan. Hopefully, more money will be provided to upgrade rail travel, making it competitive with that of Japan's state of the art fast############### trains.

Thanks for stopping in! Have a great week ahead!

20. Hello, Mina!!!
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 01:25 PM by MaineDem
Welcome back. :)

Thanks for the article on the porters. I love trains but I have never been overnight on one. We have new Amtrak service from Portland to Boston now. It's not always as fast as driving but it's an enjoyable ride.

And I hope you odn't mind but I always skip right over your nasty dessert pics! (It looks way too good and I need to stay away from temptation.)

1. What are your labor day plans?
I'm trying to put together a web site for my town. I have to present it at the Selectmen's meeting tomorrow. Plus I'm listening to the Red Sox game and trying to watch US Open tennis when it isn't raining.

2. Did you see any Summer Movies? If so, rate the movie !
The only thing I've seen lately is "Bowling for Columbine".

3. Have you ever traveled by rail, Amtrack? What was your experience?
I've taken to Portland-Boston train a few times and Boston-New York a few times. I prefer it to flying. My husband and I would love to make the Trans-Canada trip some day. That looks awesome.

Thanks for the (as always) great Monday thread! :hi:

Edited 'cause I messed up the italics.

37. Close your eyes :-) No Desserts or I'll make fat-free!

Hello MaineDem! Happy Labor Day!

Thanks for the welcome back. Glad to see you too. :)

Thanks for your appreciation on the subject of the the Pullman porters. I have spent the night on a train many years ago. I really like train travel. The dining car! I was surprised at the elegance in the dining room. How much fun it was to eat while we moved! The Porters were able to carry that food without every falling, water included.

I found this picture of a dining car:

OK, now to the questions of the day !

1. You are putting together a web site for your town! Very nice. Make sure you pm a link. I love tennis also. I try and watch when I able.

2. Once again, Bowling For Columbine is the popular choice at The Democratic Underground . And your review?. I agree.

3. You have traveled the Amtrack from Portland-Boston and Boston-New York a few times. I hope that you and your husband will have an opportunity to take that rail travel to Canada.

Thanks so much for your compliments. I appreciate those comments very very much.

Much love,

Mina :hi:

24. Wow! Thanks much for the history lesson!
What a story of workers sticking together to effect change. Now, if only people would do that today imagine what could happen. After all there are more workers than employers that's for sure.

1. My labor day plans were nixed on account of rain and lots of it. I surfed the Internet and did laundry.

2. Yes, I saw some summer movies
Matrix Reloaded: OK but a bit slow in parts. This is to be expected from a middle story I guess
Hulk: Better than I expected
X2:X Men united: Really good
The Pirates of the Carribean: it has Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom (Legolas) what more needs to be said. Not much of a plot but the eye candy sure was nice.
If I saw any other movies they must not have made an impression because I can't recall any other titles right now.

3. Yes, I have traveled by Amtrak and it was a pleasant experience for the most part. The employees aren't always in the best of moods but I take that with a grain of salt. It is more comfortable than a bus and I can plug my laptop in and watch DVDs. I wish I had enough vacation time to take the train from St Louis to Arizona because that is supposed to be a beautiful trip.

41. Your welcome, ikojo! (I love your DU Name!)

Welcome to Mondays 'IN' The Undergroundrailroad! WE meet up to mix and mingle, trying to jump-start our week ahead.

Ikojo, isn't that a great story that has everything. Activism, Civil Rights, "Manhood" Rights for Black males, Union Rights and most important it is about many of the men who were direct descendants of Slavery and the initiative they took to bring about change. Thanks for your comments.

I think just about every State in the US had a lot or a little rain. However, it is fun to just plug the laptop in and let your imagination be your guide. I absolutely love the WWW. I really think I learn something new every day and it is so much fun. As for the laundry? :(

I see you have had a busy summer and you have enjoyed quite a few movies. I see you gave X MAN 2 a very high rating  .
I wanted to see MATRIX RELOADED . I saw THE MATRIX twice. It was difficult to follow. Watching people go underground and jumping around amazed me more than the story line itself. I agree, the "eye candy" is sometimes more fun to watch than trying to figure out the story line.

I see you have traveled the rails, on AMTRAK. It appears that you have a positive experience. I hope one day you will make that St Louis to Arizona trip on AMTRAK. I also heard it is just beautiful!

Thanks again for stopping in to say hello. I hope to see you again.

Best wishes,

Mina

42. Mina I will be back next Monday
I love your responses to everyone's posts. You sound so nice and kind. Today was my first visit and you made me feel welcomed and at home! What at way to start a week.

I normally don't look forward to Mondays but if your posts are a fixture it gives me something to look forward to.

I agree with your assessment of the Pullman Porters. It took a lot of courage and determination to organize the way they did. This is history that should be taught to everyone but it is not because the powers that be don't want us to organize.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!

I give the Undergroundrailroad a

28. Happy Labor Day, Mina!
That strawberry shortcake looks yummy!

I saw a special on the Pullman Porters Brotherhood on Discovery Channel, or History Channel, one of those; fascinating.

My plans for today:

1. Yard work. It's actually already done. Haircut. (Won't take long, I have only slightly more hair than your average cue-ball.)Tonight, rest and relax with my wife.

2. Nope. Didn't see any. Talkative, cell-phone-answering, candy-unwrapping audiences just spoil the experience for me.

3. Traveled by rail all the time in Europe. Loved it.

Have a good day, Mina! Great to have you back! :hi:

44. Well good evening Aristus! Happy Labor Day to you too!
Cool Strawberry Shortcake ROCKS! OK, Aristus. Here ya go :)

Yes, you are correct. There were several movies and documentaries about the Pullman porters. One was produced by SHOWTIME, an original movie titled, 10,000 Black Men Named George . It was hurtful to look at, but it was a story that had to be told.

Now, tell me about your day Aristus!

1. Yard work , hair cut  , and finally R/R with your wife    !
2. Aristus, your making me laugh (LOL!) but you are so correct. The candy wrappers are coming to GET YOU!! OK, well, what about a movie on HBO or ABC? Anything? BTW, I love A&E and the History channel.

3. Traveled via train in Europe and LOVED IT! Wow! That's nice :)

Well, have a great week ahead Aristus! I'll see you next week.

Mina

PS: It was me opening the candy wrappers ;-)
