I walk around 5 miles a day and I have a question
I am an old bag that needs to lose about 30 pounds.

If I do the Atkins diet along with walking 5 miles a day how long do you think that it would take me to lose 30 lbs?

1. It depends on how fast you burn calories.

3,500 calories = one pound of fat. It looks like you have about 105,000 calories to burn. :P

3. Don't do the Atkins
Buy the book "The Glycemic Revolution". (Better informed version of the South Beach Diet). Pounds will melt off. It is definitely the way to go, for both health, understanding what carbs mean, and for lifelong fitness.

4. Personally i think the Atkins diet is a bunch of crap

Recently I lost 30 lbs by jogging an additional 15 mins a day, started weight training, and cut soda out of my diet. This was in a span of 1 and a half months! <edit spelling>

5. 6 months, but Atkins is a bad diet.
It's hard on your kidneys, for starters. Try weight Watchers, instead, or go to your local hospital and see the dietician there--- the consultation is normally free, and you'll get a good, balanced diet that will not only help you take the weight off, but will help you keep it off.

:)

6. Keep walking! And
Edited on Mon Aug-09-04 05:09 PM by Raven
forget Atkins...lower your fat intake and be patient! Five mile is alot to walk each day...enjoy the walk and eat sensibly. I used to walk that much and sometimes, when I got home, I fel I deserved a big pizza or an ice cream sunday. It usually undid all the good I had dome by walking. Watch your fat intake and you will be fine and lose about 2 pounds a week. Good luck!

7. Don't cut carbs if you will be exercising
You can cut sugar, white bread, and other processed carbs but don't cut it as much as many people do on these diets. It is healthier for your body to burn fat and carbohydrate when doing aerobic exercise. Burning proteins are poisionous to your body especially when you are burning a lot of them over a short period of time. We had a couple runners in my college athletic conference who had to be hospitalized after doing this sort of thing for a couple of seasons.

8. High fat comsumption increase extremely harmful free radicals.

Weight loss on Aitken's tapers off after 6 months. Cutting out carns is unhealthy. The following article is an excellent primer about free radicals and the importance of getting enough antioxidants.

"If FREE RADICALS get out of control, they can damage body tissues and cells by altering their molecular structure. They can even damage DNA (the body's genetic code), resulting in the faulty manufacture of cells.

Free radicals have been blamed for contributing to more than 60 diseases, including cancers, heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, Parkinson's disease and diabetes."

10. New study "Don't rely on supplements alone," researchers say
A new study supports the advice of health organizations, including the American Institute for Cancer Research, that vegetables and fruits are preferable to supplements for harnessing antioxidant power.

In this recent study, participants ate the same basic diet that excluded all vegetables and fruits. One group, however, was also given about six servings of fruits and vegetables a day. A second group received a vitamin and mineral supplement in place of the vegetables and fruits. Before and after the 25-day program, researchers tested the participants for their levels of oxidation damage, as well as antioxidant nutrients and defense systems.

This study indicates that vegetables and fruits provide more antioxidant protection than supplements alone. The group that ate vegetables and fruits showed significantly less oxidation damage than the others.
