Computer HELP needed! I can't get past my Windows login page!
Edited on Sat Aug-07-04 09:48 PM by frank frankly
To clarify: the computer goes fine all the way through the login, but as soon as I get a glimpse of my desktop, it goes right back to the login. EVERY TIME!

I use Windows 2000, fyi...

If anybody can direct me to a good troubleshooting guide or something like that, please post a link. I am completely shut out!

I have also tried logging on through Safe Mode and no luck!

My computer friend is out of town until next week, so any help is appreciated. I am currently using another computer...

:argh:

:hi:

6. Holy cow!
Every few months? Have you considered a Macintosh? I've been using Macs for 16 years and have never had any problems like that.

3. What version of Windows are you using ?
If you are using windows 98 try pressing cancel on the login screen. If you are using something else I have no idea.

4. That happened to some of my colleagues when the Sasser virus
was going around. They all got sasser and it did the same thing you are describing.

7. Did you add a new drive recently?
If not, as the person above said, it can happen if a hard drive gets damaged.

One thing you can try is to do a chkdsk. Boot from your win2k cd. When it asks you if you want to install or repair, choose the repair option. When it asks you if you have an ERD disk or if you want to repair manually, choose the manual option. This will take you to a command line interface. It will ask you which windows installation you want to repair, usually only one choice. Type in the number that is listed (usually 1) for the win2k installation you want to repair. Then it will ask you for a username and password to log onto that windows installation. Use your regular username and pass, or the administrator and its password.

Then you should get a command prompt. Just type 'chkdsk /r' and hit enter. It should check your drive to see if there are any problems. If there are, it'll tell you and that's probably what is causing your problem. If it's able to fix them, it should get it back to a point to where you can get logged in. Sometimes the page file will get fried and can cause problems like this.

Just take it slowly and read the info when booting to the installation cd. I'm typing this from memory, so I may have missed a couple of prompts, but you should get the gist. If you need, I'll boot my win2k cd and write down the steps to get you through the chkdsk.

Just let me know.

9. No prob. Hope you get it worked out.
Yeah, just PM me or whatever. If I can be of any help, I'd be more than happy to.

I would try the chkdsk thing before reinstalling. I don't know what computer you're on now, but if it's a win2k machine, you could pull the drive out of the other computer and stick it in this one as a secondary drive and do a chkdsk from within windows.
