Your thoughts on Smashing Pumpkins.
I am now listening to the grunge rock station on my yahoo player and they are playing a lot of them. I was slightly sheltered and didn't hear much besides 1979 on the radio when I was younger.

5. When I lived in Chicago (which really has no relevance) ...
my roommate use to play them ALL the time. I never cared for them initial and certainly not after. I won't miss them.

They aren't back, are they?

8. Occasionally brilliant, often tedious.
I, unfortunately caught them on a night when they played for three and a half hours, of which at least three hours were solos.

9. They're Ok
They don't flip me out.

My brush with fame has to do with them, though. The first band Jimmy Chamberlain ever played in was mine! I brought him on as a drummer in my band when he was 16 and i was 20. Man, he was good, even back then.

I always believed that had Pumpkins not had him as the drummer, they would not have been good enough to have attracted the attention they did in their early days. He was far and away the best musician in that band.

13. I did not know that.

Was Jimmy from your area? I once met a woman who claimed to be his sister. This was maybe 10 years ago. This occured in the South Burbs, so this is why I ask.

I like a few songs, but they never wowed me enough to buy any of their product. I think that Corgan should just release Billy Corgan albums and stop the pretense that he's in a "band'.

Everyone knows that Iha and whoever was playing bass at the time really didn't play much in the studio.

16. He's From Joliet
Lived over the Parkview subdivision. (A subdivision from where you CANNOT see the park. Go figure.) That could have been his sister. I know he does have a sister.

His brother was in the central IL band Slink Rand. Probably the loudest barband i ever heard. Good, not great, but Mike was a good drummer. I would guess, though, by the time Jimmy was 19, he was better than Mike.

Jimmy went on to play with Rose (a Kiss knock-off) after i folded the tent on that band in 1979. That band was my "total control" experience. Surrounded myself with followers so i could run everything. It was exhausting and made me want to be in a more egalitarian band. Needed to get that out of my system i guess.

But, i got along with Jimmy great for that 16 months.

11. "Adore" is a vastly underrated album.
They lost a lot of fans by making a quieter album after "Mellon Collie", but it's a really good album. Unlike "Machina" which is a totally unlistenable (save for a couple tracks) piece of pretentious shit, even by Billy Corgan standards.

And "Siamese Dream" is one of my Top Ten of all-time.

12. They have great cover art - otherwise they have a few tunes I can stomach
I like the song Honey - I don't care for too much else. They're VERY hit or miss.

15. I'll go with Lord Byron's assesement....
Occassionaly brilliant but often tedious. They have some incredibly powerful rock moments and some great tunes. But they also had a tendency towards overindulgence and ego.

Some of the guitar work on Siamese Dream is great in a way that straddles the line between metal and indie rock.
