Couple Sleeping In Tent Injured When Tree Falls On Them

OCALA NATIONAL FOREST, Fla. -- A sleeping couple were injured by a 45-foot tall pine tree that fell on their tent Saturday morning.

The couple, whose names were not released, were camping along the Ocklawaha River when the tree fell on the tent at about 3:50 a.m., pinning the woman beneath the tree. The man crawled out of the tent and called 911, said Heather Danenhower, a spokeswoman with Marion County Fire-Rescue.

Rescue workers were able to lift the tree up enough off her legs and lower abdomen to slide her out and place her on a back board. She was airlifted to Shands Hospital in Gainesville, where she was in serious but stable condition. She suffered possible crushed bones and internal injuries, Danenhower said.
