Saturday night drink thread
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 07:42 PM by Droopy
How y'all doin'? I'm alright especially seeing as how I got the night off work making it possible for me to enjoy a few cold ones.

I decided to try something different tonight instead of having my usual. I've heard good things about Guinness and decided to give it a shot. So I went down to the beer specialty store and plunked down a cold $8.67 for a six pack of the Irish brew. I thought for that much it has to be good.

I got home and poured the black stuff into a glass and took a drink. I don't think I've ever tasted a beer that bad in my entire life. My first reaction was to gag, but I managed to hold on to the contents of my stomach. I'm probably going to get flamed for that, but I really don't see what people see in the stuff. I guess maybe it's an acquired taste, but I don't see how people get past the acquiring.

So I went out to the corner store and got me a six pack of Miller Lite tall boys for $5.50. The old tried and true. What are you drinking tonight?

2. I'm going to mix a can of Diet Sunkist with a can of generic club soda.
Then I'm going to drink it.

I would rather drink a margarita rocks mixed by my own hand.
I would rather drink a Mango Misto from Rita's.
I would rather drink the melted dregs of chocolate ice cream, after eating a pint of the frozen form.

But I'll enjoy the soda.

4. A nice Sam Adams would do right now...
Edited on Sat Jul-31-04 07:28 PM by Cousinit13
Sadly I have none and am home alone and "technically" underage. However there is a bottle of vodka on the counter that is just screaming "make me into a martini"

On edit:
I can't drink Guiness either, my dad and uncles love it though. It's too bitter for me, Sam is about as dark of a beer as I go.

6. I can handle Sam Adams
It's kind of pricey if I recall right, though. I should have known better than to try a dark beer. I've had it before and didn't like it. I guess I just thought Guinness would be better. Shame on me for thinking.

10. Yeah its not cheap
The last one I had was at my uncle's house the other night and best thing about it, it didn't cost anything (for me at least)

I've just been having a hankering for some the last couple of days, maybe I'll tell my dad to pick me up a 6 pack tomorrow.

As for Guinness, I try a sip every time someone I know gets one and I regret it every time. Lets just hope I don't have to go to Ireland anytime soon...not only does it flow like water in the pubs, its ROOM TEMPERATURE! yuck!

8. Guinness in a can with the Rocket Widget
Drink a pint of draft in a pub in Ireland and you will never speak of Guinness with such irreverence the rest of your life.

Unfortunately Guinness doesn't age or travel well, so its never quite as good here. If its not properly handled it will have a bitter after taste instead of its true smoothness and creaminess. Its not easy to find a consistently good source. I find that by far your best bet is to buy it in the cans with the rocket widget. Second, bottles with the widget, and last bottles without widget.

Try this: get them really cold and by the second or third one your taste buds will get acclimated and you'll change your opinion.

12. It said on the box to serve very cold
So I came home and put them in the freezer for a while before I tried it. It was very cold when I took a drink, I just thought it was nasty. I tried to drink a whole one but I just couldn't do it. It was making me nauseus.

11. Damn
In the Great White North I'm shelling out 10-12 bucks for a six pack. It's very good beer but it gets expensive. It won't stop me, however. Try an Alexander Keith's Pale Ale if you ever get up this way. Trust me, your dollar goes a long way in Canada.

13. Stella Artois
In the local bars the Stella bottles let us identify the other members of the "lefty elitist" club (that and our Babs secret decorder rings).

Actually, it's because I refuse to drink the swill on tap here (choices typically range from Budweiser to Coors Light).

Have a couple Irish acquaintences - sitting outdoors in Tucson the other night about 85 degrees F drinking guiness - BLEH I had a nice refreshing mojito - mmmmmmmm

I like Heineken pretty good, it's better than Miller Lite, but I'm a cheap bastard. Most of the Lite I get is from my mom who works for Miller and I get it for free. But we're out of it right now and I guess the stuff has kind of grown on me because I went out and bought some.

I usually drink Heineken when I'm out in the bar but at this one place, twice a week, there is a special $1.50 domestic bottles then I usually have a Coors Light.

We went on a quest for the cheapest beer imaginably for (testosterone filled) nights of playing "quarters" in the barracks (you want to hear about the drunken lunatic with a machette?).

Falls City Light won. 95 cents a six-pack. We could get 5 cases and two packs of generic cigarettes for just over 20 bucks.

It tasted like ass, though.

thats the classic martini and the drink should be stirred because shaking the martini will ruin the gin.

However there are many variations of martinis. I prefer mine with vodka and a dash of vermouth

Ironic
Alanis Morissette

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
Isn't it ironic... don't you think

(chorus)
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-bye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well, isn't this nice."
And isn't it ironic ... don't you think

(repeat chorus)

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

I can't decide between Corona (6 pak: $11.25)

On the Guinness front I once found myself in an Irish Pub. I like tradition, so I ordered a Guinness. (I'm not a huge beer drinker, especially back then.) Talk about jumping in on the deep end. My friend had a root beer, which I used as a chaser... it helped. I have yet to visit Guinness again.

Has anyone tried wheat beer with lemon. Very good. (I'm so West Coast.)
