Blue Moon Rising Over Northern Arizona
We had to go outside and watch it come up over the pines. Something about the crisp clear air here that makes it appear brighter, larger, and more beautiful than full moons already are.

Amazing how the moon has held such romance and fascination over us over the millenia. Any ideas on why that is so?

1. I think the naturalness of the lunar cycles is part of the reason.
You have less atmosphere to look through up thar in the hills...that's one of the nice things about living in the mountains.

3. yes
The thin air here is a plus... part of the reason we have a great observatory... Pluto was discovered here! The Big Bang theory was developed due to red shift being measured for the first time from here.

5. A friend of mine brought me a magnet from the observatory.
One of these days I'll have to see for myself. I'll have to see that big hole in the ground out there, too.

I'll also have to purge the bad Flagstaff memories. I just remember my mom bitching about the hotel not having a/c (in July). They went out and bought us a fan. :D

6. I'll set you up
Most (or all by now) of the hotels DO have AC, so maybe you were on the cheap!

I am the master tour guide. You will leave with much better memories.

7. Yes, my dad is known for his cheapness.
We were also "on a schedule", which is why we didn't make it to the Canyon. Of course he and mom have been twice. Now mom reports that dad likes to see EVERYTHING. I had to ask what the pod people did with my dad.

Well, there is only ONE way to go - ride the rails with the Zomby! The Canyon is amazing... it never looks the same way twice because of the colors, the light, the sky... it is something all people should see.

And hey, don't forget I live across from a course. ;-)

10. welcome mat is always out
By the time you can visit, we should have a house instead of this apartment, and we would have a guest room anyway. Outcheap your Dad, and have AC!

13. I'd like to see Austin
My Texas experiences as follows:

April 1969, our drive across Texas took us from El Paso to Texarkana in our move from San Diego to Chattanooga. Took 2 days at least to cross. Spent the night in Dallas. I wasn't yet 2, so my memories are hazy at best.

December 31, 1978. We flew into DFW on a stopover to Tucson and San Diego, our destination. It was snowy and icy, and we were one of the very few planes allowed to leave. I was 11, so this is very vivid, lol.

August 1989. DFW again, flying back to Seattle after visiting friends back east. The gate to my connecting flight was the ADJACENT door, so no muss, no fuss. Lucky me, the weather was 100 outside, which couldn't have been any more different than 1978.

July 2001. Houston, aka hell, for a stopover and plane change. Was greeted by a statue of Bush Sr, and waited forver (1.5 hours) for my flight. So damn smoggy I couldn't see the city coming in. Never again, if I can help it. Filthy nasty airport, worse than Detroit, where I stopped over only a week before.

So yeah, I could use an actual visit in its liberal oasis. :-)

15. I'll have to take y'all to dinner at the Jenna Bush Memorial Chuy's.
There are some really cool parts to this town. There are other parts that suck, but we'll stay out of those areas. :D

Edited on Fri Jul-30-04 10:48 PM by GOPisEvil
We had our Kerry-watching party there last night.

It's probably been 2 years since I've seen Molly there, but I see Marcia Ball there all the time when she's not touring. I've seen Natalie Maines there a couple times.

This is who I'm listening to now: www.scottbiram.com Depression blues.

At a high altitude, that is hotter than 85 elsewhere.

11. I'm only a hundred miles away, & still can't see shit!
Fucking Las Vegas and its fucking light pollution. It wasn't so bad when it was only casinos, but with street lights every 20 feet in 30 miles of urban sprawl. IT's a miracle I can even see Luna at all.

I can't even go out to the lake or up to the mntns anymore to get away from the city lights. When I want to point out constellations to my kid or look at a blue moon clearly, I have to drive a hundred miles out into the desert.

Sigh.

14. that sucks
I would think even with Vegas being so bright, that you still wouldn't have to go too far as sparse as the outlying regions are, but I can understand!
