'Simpsons' Character To Come Out Of Closet

SAN DIEGO -- A long time character on "The Simpsons" is about to come out of the closet.

But the show's producers aren't saying who. The betting seems to favor Waylon Smithers, who for years has harbored a secret crush on Mr. Burns.

Producer Al Jean said it happens during an episode where Springfield legalizes gay marriage.

It seems like that is the way the subtext has been going lately.

Smithers has been "openly" gay for a long time.
Episodes have shown him in gay bars, etc.

3. Last season, Smithers was seen wearing pink shorts while ...

roller skating down the street in Springfield's "gay" part of town and all the residents seemed to know him very well. ;-) I think it's a pretty safe bet it's him! He's been pretty much "out" to the audience for a while ... but not to Springfield residents. But I must admit, I've always wondered about Lenny and Carl, too. :evilgrin:

So who do you think will react the worst to the news? I can't imagine Rev. Lovejoy and Flanders will be happy about it. (Wouldn't it be funny if Flanders was the one in the closet?)

9. It HAS to be Patty

Smithers isn't exactly "in" the closet, no one has ever asked him if he is gay, but he isn't exactly hiding anything either. The only time we ever got a clue about Patty was the "Still in the Closet" float in the Springfield Gay Pride Parade, when we hear Patty's voice coming from inside the closet.
