Open The Pod Bay Doors, Hal!
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 09:18 PM by arwalden

I loved that movie... HONEST! I just loved it.

Only... I didn't understand the ending. Did you get it? Can you explain it to me in simple terms? What was the deal with Dave being able to observe himself at different ages? What was the significance of the embryo?

I must truly be dense because I'm afraid 2010 didn't help to explain the mysteries of 2001.

1. I once used that line in a sex scene
between two astronauts in a script I wrote.

Well, it was better than, "It's turkey time"

2. 2010 literalized and ruined the story....IMHO
Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 09:43 PM by edzontar
The ambiguity of the thing was part of the point--especially in the film.

Read the Arthur C. Clarke novel for the "explanation"--its basically that the aliens have engineered the next stage of human evolution.

It's not supposed to make linear "sense" because it is all happening at a level beyond human conceptions of time, space, and identity, etc.

Does this help?

10. That sort-of helps. --- I Wish There Was A Dummies Book...
'2001: A Space Odyssey For Dummies'

I'd buy it.

P.S. Thanks edzontar!

3. Some Irony in 2010
The NSA order stored in HAL was dated January 29, 2001, which if that really happened, the order would have been generated by the Bush White House.

5. Interesting....
You mean Whistle-Ass was teaching computers to lie after only nine days in office?

In the book HAL states that he became operational in January of 1992.
In the movie it was moved up to 1999.

This leads me to ask... If it was the former.... what the hell was a state of the art space craft doing with a nine year old computer?
If the latter.... HAL sure learned a lot of things REAL fast.... even for a computer.

4. The only thing I know is...
...it's best to watch it when stoned on acid, trippin' on LSD, et cetera... that's what lots of people have told me, and not one of them are under 50... I envy them...

8. Some people over 50
think everything is better if they're stoned on acid.

Aging hippies.

It's why many people over 50 don't make sense the rest of the time either.

14. But time it correctly
I have a friend who exclaimed, "Shit I peaked a half hour ago!" in a crowded movie theater when the light-show scene started. Everyone bust out laughing.

7. I agree--I'm one of those 50-year olds
Who saw it over and over again in 1968.

At the Cinerama Theater in Boston. Three big screens--curving, and huge speakers in the aisles.

The thing was overwhelming.
