Freepy customer I dealt with today--funny
So this woman comes up to the register with two kids, aged about six, and a cartload of items. I start ringing it up, and there's a T-shirt that comes up at $5.99, and she freaks out. "Five ninety-nine?! But they're three for eleven dollars!"

"Yes, but to get that deal you have to buy three," I explain. "Want to go back and get a couple more?"

She glares at me. "Were you born in America?" she asks in this very snotty tone, as if it's the worst insult she can imagine.

I look incredulous--what a bizarre question! "Yes, I was...why?"

"Well, this is America and that kind of deal is illegal here. I just thought maybe you weren't born here, maybe you don't know the law yet."

(Okay, back up a sec...first off, wouldn't that be a state issue rather than a federal one? Second, it isn't illegal as far as I know. Third, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, I'm just a check-out girl who does not make policy for the whole giant store chain.)

I explain to her that I don't have the authority to change the deal.

"Get me the manager," she says.

Obligingly, I page the manager: "Ms. V, come to Register One..."

Freepshit says, "I hope she doesn't have white hair!"

Another bizarre question. "White hair?" I say, confused. "Why?"

"Well, the kids were climbing on the shelves and this mean old lady with white hair told them, 'Get down!' and that is no way to talk to children! She was mean, wasn't she, kids?" Freep looks down for kids to nod; kids look like they want to crawl into a hole and hide.

"The shelves are very flimsy," I explain, "and could easily collapse and your kids could get hurt."

"You know what? You're a control freak, that's what you are! I want to talk to the store manager, now." Freeplady is getting quite red in the face.

I page the store manager.

"That better not be the white-haired lady," she says.

"No, this is Mr. R."

"Oh, Mr. R? I thought you were calling the same person. You need to speak more clear-ly," she says, pointing toward her mouth and talking like I might be too dumb to understand her.

Trying to make her feel ashamed, I very sweetly tell her, "Well, I had cancer of the tongue, I'm glad to be able to speak at all."

Freep huffs a bit. "You know what? I'm leaving, I don't have to take this!" she says.

"Well, if you wait a minute Mr. R will be here. You said you want to talk to the store manager..." I'm actually hoping Mr. R *does* come; at this point it's almost amusing to watch this freeper get wound up. (I'm awful sometimes!)

"No, this is America, and I don't have to stay here!" she says, heading for the door.

"And this is private property, maybe you shouldn't come back!" I say.

"Oh, I'll come back all right! Just not while YOU'RE working!" she snits. (I think: Oooooh, and deprive me of the pleasure of your company? I'm crushed, anything but *that*!)

Later we all had a good laugh. I'm sure the lady was a Freeper, considering all her, "This is *America*!" blathering...

And how was YOUR day?

Tucker

2. I WANT TO KICK THAT WOMAN'S ASS
Welcome back to the working world Tucker; it SUCKS, doesn't it? Is it me or are people getting ruder and ruder? Whenever I get paged by a certain guy named Terry in Iowa I inevitably grit my teeth because no matter what the situation it is URGENT and he acts like an A**HOLE. :O

conceived patriotism. Puke puke puke. Glad I work in a hole in the cellar.

4. Fuck me, Tucker, you get the best ones, don'tcha!
Absolutely stark, staring, mad as a fish in a privet hedge.

Bonkers.

Totally tonto.

2 sheep short in the top field.

And so forth.....

Words cannot begin to describe the insanity of this woman. Sounds like she was out for a fight. You can bet that she went home and told all her friends about the appalling abuse she suffered today, too.

I know it's not unique to the US, but I see that sort of attitude as being one of America's fundamental problems - it's the land of the free, therefore I am allowed to do anything I like and everyone has to do what I tell them, we're not in Russia you know...

Thanks for the laugh.

6. Haha!
Once you've really pissed them off, you've won!!! Everything else is just icing on the cake! All that was lacking was for you to casually make a chalkmark on the side of the register as she huffed off.

7. First thought that came to my head is I want to beat the shit our of her
Who the hell did she think she was talking to you like that. Do you speak English and they pointing at her damn mouth. If I would have been behind the b*tch in line you guys might had to call the police because I would had punched her and I am not violent.

What a f*cking b*tch! She probably felt good about herself trying to get a shirt for the cheap price and she was so dumb that she didn't understand the deal on the shirts was only if you purchase 3 of them at the same time.

Damn like I keep saying Republicans are DUMB!

Not necessarily. Remember she said,

"kids look like they want to crawl into a hole and hide."

Freeper Mom is humiliating her kids; what better way to reject the insanity of your upbringing than by becoming world's biggest liberal?

10. I'm reminded of a line in Blazing Saddles
when I hear about idiots such as this:

"You've got to remember that these are just simple farmers. They're people of the land. The common clay of the New West. You know – morons."

14. BTW - you should have agreed with her on the pricing.....
and agreed to give her a T-shirt providing she could tender exactly two thirds of $11......

"That will be $3.66 and two thirds cents......well you asked for it!"

15. also, don't take their shit, be stricly business only with those morons
For example, when she asked you "Where you born in america?" you can sidestep the question quickly with:

"I think that's irrelevant to our conversation, is there anything with your purchase today that I can help you with?"

Classic customer service deflection tactic, works like a charm. Try it out sometime, you can be dismissive without being rude.

16. I once "managed" a shoe store
And I KNOW I was thee worst at it. I was always rude to dumb customers or people who where rude back. I work with a girl who I miss dearly these days named Olga. Olga was russian was fun to be around. And when a customer got out of line, she'd freak out and kick them out of the store as I laughed. Too bad Olga wasn't with you today.

17. As a former govt office manager let me say, you handled this...
brilliantly. Many people are friendly. Most people are okay. Some are indifferent but a few are determined in advance to be assholes. They will try to drag you down to their level and then you, the employee, are at fault for being rude to the customer. You sidestepped her beautifully, put her in her place, and sent her packing.

Wish you had worked for me...

20. That is crazy!
I can't believe there are actually people with the tenacity to say such things!

You handled the situation beautifully however. Good job!

I'm wondering what prompted her to ask whether or not you were born in America. Are you a minority? I bet this bitch wouldn't have asked such a question to a blonde haired blue eyed employee. Most likely wouldn't have given an attitude to him or her either.

God, people make me sick sometimes.

Ninety percent of the customers are great, ten percent suck and make your job a living hell. And I've never suffered fools gladly. Just had to get out of retail and find a job where I don't do customer service.

It's best not to deal with them on their terms, but simply keep speaking in a polite, official manner.

27. Upon further thought...
"Well, this is America and that kind of deal is illegal here. I just thought maybe you weren't born here, maybe you don't know the law yet."

What the hell could she have possibly been referring to??? Is she just making shit up off the top of her head to save face for looking like a "moran"?

This puzzles me even more than the fact that she thought you weren't American.

28. Customers need training too...
and possibly more than the staff.

www.customerssuck.com

(Where the customer is never right.)

A friend on mine was a holy terror in stores for years. They were always out to get her, the staff was inept and rude... I told her horror stories about the store I managed at the time, but it made no difference.

So, one day she opened her own store.

Bwahahahahahaha!

You should see her shopping now.

Bwahahahahahah!

I'm still amazed that some people act this way in public.

As far as the mean, white haired lady, this FReepazoid would be the first one to sue your store for millions if her kid had been injured while using the store shelves as a jungle gym.

Sorry you had to put up with her crap but thanks for the laugh.
