It sounds like he doesn't have the right diagnosis. Maybe they don't know what's wrong and just pumped full of meds hoping something would work. One can be severely mentally ill and only need one or two meds and not necessarily in high doses.
I take 160 mg a day of Geodon and 900 mg a day of Lithium. That's a high dose of Geodon and an average dose of Lithium. It's working wonderfully for me. The only side affects are that I need more sleep than I used to and I don't have as much energy as I used to. It's a good trade-off for not being psychotic. Geodon is a newer anti-psychotic that's supposed to be affective in treating the symptoms of schizophrenia without all the side affects of traditional anti-psychotics.
They must have him on more than just Geodon. It sounds like they are giving him a sedative, also. When I was in the hospital one time on the psych ward they had a room mate of mine on sedatives. The guy could hardly function and spent most of his time sleeping. I don't know why they had him doped up so much. The guy was a drug addict who was seriously depressed. He got them to take him off the sedatives and just give him something for the depression. He improved rapidly after that.
