College!
Hey y'all, I'm checking in from a small scenic liberal arts college in Ohio! We've been having trouble with the viruses that have been going around . . . so I haven't been able to get on until now. It is so good to see everyone again! I'm having a super time so far--my classes and professors, for the most part, seem really cool. I hope I'll be able to talk more than only once a week--I have never had so much to do in such a short period of time!! :-)

Quick advice question--I need to find a better way to study than notes. I'm remembering the lecture stuff, but when I have to take notes out of the text, it doesn't seem to stick as well--any ideas?

Thanks in advance and, again, it's good to see everyone!

1. A lot of times it depends upon the way the profs set it up...
CONDOR--If they say that most of their exams will come from their lectures--i.e. "you've gotta be there!"--then your class notes should do it for you. If they tell you that most of the exam will come from the texts, then it's good to take "marginal" notes from some of the capters to augment what they say in class, but don't wrack your brain too hard on that...you'll retain most of it from what you read. If you think it will help, do what my military history professor at Carolina told us. Read the first and last sentence, AND the first and last paragraph, of every chapter. THAT will give you a better outline of thins in the texts than you think!

B-)

2. if you do well audibly...
then go out and buy yourself a minidisc recorder...record your lectures and listen to them again.

3. For me...
It has always worked better to just listen and try to understand the lecture than to try to take notes of everything. Of course you will have to take down important things, the difficulty being identifying what is important.

One of the best suggestions I can give you is to read slightly ahead of the class. This way you will already have a good idea of what the prof is talking about and it makes understanding what they are saying about 10 times easier. It is very difficult to always be learning something for the first time while in class, if you kind of know what is going on it is more understandable, less stressful and it will actually give you a positive feeling about the class. Just the opposite will happen if you are always lagging just a little behind.
