1. Thanksgiving
1) No let down feeling the day after because you didn't get the present you wanted.
2) No imaginary beings/people you have to believe in (Santa Claus, Easter Bunny)
3) No requirement to exchange gifts.
4) It's just a great time for family to get together, eat a shitload, and watch/play football.

By far, my favorite holiday.

Brian

6. In total agreement with Brian here
Especially re: football games. The Detroit Lions, after all, started the Thanksgiving football game thing in 1934 and it's WAY IMPORTANT to us Michiganians. The turkey's good, too -- but it's mostly about the football.
John
Turkey is a comfort food, which is also important what with the way the Lions have played for the last two years.

9. And just where, might I ask, is Kamehameha Day?
Oh yeah, like your holiday is celebrated with a hula festival! As if!

Oh yes, it's June 11, which you may want to remember if you feel like taking off work next June 11.

Kuhio Day (March 28) seems not to have made the cut, either. Same for Statehood Day (formerly Admission Day; Friday before Aug. 21).

I guess "East Coast bias" is for real after all! :-)

19. Labor Day...
And not because it's coming up soon, but because it is the only American holiday that honors the everyday, average worker--like all of us who have to earn our daily bread without benefit of stock options and bond dividends, which lo and behold are taxed at a cheaper rate!!

My second favorite "holiday" is Groundhog Day, because it's my birthday, and the movie rocks.

But Easter comes a close second. I'm a church organist and it's the climax of the Christian year. I start preparing three months in advance.

21. Halloween
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 04:33 PM by oneighty
in Western NY state. The fallen leaves rustle underfoot, their fragrance

fills the air. The children arrive at your front door, the first timers hesitant

a bit frightened, their parents urging them on. The bags they carry fill with candy

and other gifts as the evening wears on. We include a few quarters with the

candy, word spreads among the children, soon we are out of candy,

quarters and children. Until next year.
