The ax has fallen at work.
As of next week, my workplace is closing its doors and I'll be unemployed. Halle-fargin-lujah. (Not!) :(

2. So sorry to hear that...
The axe is falling slowly at my place of employment. I'm on vacation, but anticipate a mandatory meeting upon return to work to be told the department is being outsourced to a contract force.

I'm supposed to keep my job, but my co-horts are out of work.
Life is a fucking (thanks Cheny) bitch.
and then you die.

3. I'm sorry
Are there any job prospects? I was almost going to be unemployed as of July 1st but then I fought for my rights that are spelled out in the agency manual and secured another job in the agency just last week. I know the administrators were probally thinking 'Damn she read the rule book'. They set workers rights out there but then they only briefly allude to them and hope nobody really reads em.

Good luck in finidng your next job.

5. Is this the drugstore
that was supposedly purchased by someone else? My sympathies to you about your impending unemployment. I've been there. No fun at all.

7. In all fairness, I can't blame this on the Bush Junta.
No, it's all the fault of the owner of my soon-to-be ex-workplace.

For the uninitiated, since 1999 I've worked as a delivery driver for a local, independently-owned pharmacy chain (three stores) in Central Connecticut. In April, Neil (the owner) sold the two main stores to Brooks Pharmacies, which took them over at the beginning of May. However, Brooks did not want to buy the third store (out of which I work) because it was too small for their purposes. So for the past three months, Neil has been trying to find a buyer for the place.

He finally found what he was looking for.

Stop & Shop has purchased the store's walk-in prescription accounts, while the group-home business has gone to a place in Enfield, near the Massachusetts border. The takeover will occur at the end of this week, at which time my co-workers and I will be shit outta luck. Thanks for the fucking notice, Neil! :grr:

I'll be getting four weeks of severance pay, plus all my accrued vacation hours and, of course, unemployment benefits. And I already have a lead on a possible new driving job. So my future isn't looking exactly bleak. At the same time, however, I can't help but feel that I've wasted the last five years of my life.

On the other hand, I just moved and will finally have time to finish my unpacking! :eyes:

11. Sounds Like What's Been Hapening In Pueblo, CO
Walgreen's moved into town a few years ago, and drove almost all the independent stores out of business. The few indy's that are left are in areas with a lot of seniors (read loyal customers who don't like driving long distances to get their scrips filled).

When American Furniture Warehouse built a store in Pueblo, nearly all the family-owned furniture stored closed within the year. And when Home Depot and Lowes came to town, almost all the mom-and-pop hardware stores vanished.

Independents have a hard time competing against chains....

12. Actually, my employer WASN'T having a hard time competing against...
...the chains.

It was actually Neil's parents who owned the company, but they were both killed in a car crash five years ago. Neil's heart was never really in the pharmacy business, which I'm guessing is why he decided to sell to Brooks.

Not that I'm defending Neil's actions. Back in April, the day after he sent out a memo announcing the sale to Brooks, Neil boarded a flight to Texas so he could watch the Huskies play basketball! Motherfucker.

9. Ain't This Bush "Recovery" Fan-Friggin'-TASTIC?????
Edited on Tue Jun-29-04 06:39 PM by CO Liberal
Sorry to hear.

Reminds me of when Exxon Office Systems closed their plant in Florham Park during Reagan's first recession (1983). I was out of work for almost four months before I got my first tech writing job.

10. See my remarks in Post #8.
Much as I'd like to blame this on Bush, I unfortunately can't.

13. I'm sorry, Dean
At least you had some warning about this. I know that's cold comfort now. You know I'm pulling for you that something far better will turn up. It sucks to lose a job - I've been there. Best of luck to you.
