Rest in peace, Tantris.
I finally had to bite the bullet today. After 6 months of ups and downs, Tantris wasn't able to lift himself up on his back legs for two days, so I took him in and stayed with him while we did what had be done.

We met ten years ago when I was visiting the shelter looking for a dog that had gotten out. I still remember how he pressed himself against his cage as he tried to lay in my lap that day. The next day, I went and picked him up. He's been a good friend.

Me and Tantris in happier times.

HE was a great looking dog and I'm sure he was a great pet.
Remember all the good times you had together!

Do you have any other pets? Planning on getting another dog?

14. You'll meet again, at Rainbow Bridge!
Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

It's hard to lose a friend, but I tried to do the best by him. His first owners left him tied up to pole on the interstate and that's how he ended up in the shelter. I'd like to think that he was meant to be with me.

he was a beautiful dog, with an obviously beautiful soul, like his owner's.

You were a wonderful "dad" to your fur kid. I know that doing what had to be done was incredibly difficult (I had to put one of my kitties down last year, so I know) but it was the kindest gift you could give him. I'm certain that he knew how much you loved him, and was grateful that you were there for him in the end.

We never forget our "fur buddies" no matter how old we get.. You look very much like my oldest son.. He is 30 now, and still has the collar of his "Blanca" on a peg in his kitchen..It's been 12 years since she "left us"..

You did him many kindnesses, and he had a very happy life..

Somewhere out there, when you least expect to find him/her, there is another friend..waiting for you to save him/her

It hurts horribly. Two years ago we had to put down our beloved 12 year old Belgian Malinois, Minx. Then a year later we had to put down Lobo who was bitten by a poisonous snake. Time will heal. Give yourself time.

50. So sorry for your loss of Tantris, liberal_veteran
As a fellow dog lover, I share your pain. I see all of my dogs in my dreams from time to time. Here is a little passage that comforted me when I helped my dog Ranger cross over last year:

The dreaming mind recalls past impressions.
It sees again what has been seen; it hears
Again what has been heard, enjoys again
What has been enjoyed in many places.
Seen and unseen, heard and unheard, enjoyed
AndThe dreaming mind recalls past impressions.
It sees again what has been seen; it hears
Again what has been heard, enjoys again
What has been enjoyed in many places.
Seen and unseen, heard and unheard, enjoyed
And unenjoyed, the real and the unreal,
The mind sees all; the mind sees all.

-Prashna Upanishad

May you visit Tantris in your dreams. :-)
