37. Nick Cave is great stuff
Though I thought Nocturama was lousy

He has some unreleased B-Sides coming out soon,if it's not out already. That should be good.

I could listen to "As I Sat Sadly By Her Side" all day long :)

7. Fairport Convention, what would you suggest?
I am a huge Nick Drake fan and he apparently loved this band. I have never heard them. What should I start with?

8. Start with a greatest hits/best of
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 01:07 AM by WildClarySage
there are several good ones. And go from there. They went through several lineups, each as good as the last (IMHO) and that should be a good intro. They are really fantastic. If you like what you hear (and there's no reason you won't!) look for a group called Fotheringay, a sort of spinoff which had some great material too.

Editing to add... this site has some mp3s and samples http://www.folkcorp.co.uk/jukebox/

12. Do you like Elliot Smith?
I love Nick Drake, and the two remind me of one another. Jeff Buckley as well, as he was a bit tortured in his own way.

18. Fairport Convention recommendations...
Edited on Sat Jun-26-04 04:10 AM by Sufi Marmot
That tastefully understated electric guitar playing on "Hazey Jane II" from Bryter Layter and "Time Has Told Me" from Five Leaves Left is Richard Thompson, of Fairport Convention and later solo fame. Dave Mattacks, once of FP, also plays drums on Bryter Layter. Joe Boyd produced both Nick Drake and FP and used FP members as backing musicians on Nick Drake's albums.

For Fairport I would start with any one of the first five albums when RT was still with the band. You can't go wrong with Unhalfbricking, What We Did On Our Holidays, Leige and Lief, or Full House. Their eponymous first album is interesting but sounds more like other 60s groups of that era and doesn't have their trademark folk-rock sound, and Sandy Denny hadn't joined the band yet.

I haven't heard much of FPs stuff done after RT left them around 1970, but maybe other people can give specific recommendations.

I'll put in a plug for Richard Thompson's entire post-Fairport catalog, which is amazing. If you like Nick Drake you might like I Want To See the Bright Lights Tonight and Pour Down Like Silver for starters.

Oh yeah, just remembered - Danny Thompson (no relation to Richard) who played bass on Five Leaves Left and was in the folk-rock band Pentangle, has been Richard Thompson's bass player for at last ~15 years.
