Have you ever won anything?
Once, a long time ago, there was a contest on a local radio station at like 3 in the morning where caller # whatever would win the scratchiest album in their collection.

I won me a copy of a Styx album.

Also, during a winter snowstorm I was able to win a "Larry The Legend Witness of a Snow Shark Attack" t-shirt from a radio show. I took an old game (Merlin) and used one of the sounds and told Larry The Legend (disc jockey) that I had recorded the sound of a snow shark mating call.

1. Couple of door prizes
One year before Christmas, they called out our license plate at the local farmers' market and we won a canned ham.

About the same time, they pulled the other half of my admission ticket in a drawing at a local festival or car show or something and I got two frying pans.

Those were both 15-20 years ago, though. Haven't won anything since.

2. 1st place in admission exams for a Brazilian university
Since the aforementioned university was located in Petrópolis, home of the former Royal Family, I got to appear on the local newspaper shaking hands with Prince Pedro de Orleans e Bragança.

Since that was before finishing high school, I couldn't get in by Brazilian law. That was OK, actually, because I had some other place in mind.

3. Tix to Guster
Who I'd never heard of and ended up not going to see because of my 100+ fever that Friday. It was a radio trivia call-in thing. Anyone ever see them? Did I miss anything good?

I also won by best fella's heart, but I'm thinking that's not what you were asking ;-)

6. I won an octopus
A real live pygmy octopus in a marine aquarium. It had about a 7" tentacle span. It ate one goldfish every day.

It was a drawing that took place at Discount Records in Harvard Square, my favorite record store at the time, sponsored by RCA Records to promote the then-new Jefferson Starship album Red Octopus. The title was inspired by the notion that octopi turn red while they're eating, which I observed to be true.

Pygmy octopi have a lifespan of about a year, and this guy was already six months old. But what really happened was, the ecology of a marine aquarium is delicate and many different parameters need to be monitored, and I seem to have let something lapse, and my octopus only lasted three months. (Actually I considered it a major success that he survived the trip home from the record store.)

7. I won a ski trip for two to Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 1999.
It was a contest on the Web site of Z93, a classic rock station in Atlanta. Just for the heck of it, I entered never expecting to win.

8. Does playing slots at the local Indian casino count?
If so, I've won several jackpots on the quarter machines. Largest jackpot was 1893.75 and the smallest was was 887.00. By jackpot I mean when you hit the topmost symbol payout. I'm not talking about those times when I've come out ahead because I decided to stop.

Oh, and I'm not implying I come out ahead or win a jackpot every time I play. So far though, I'm still playing on their money.

11. According to the (taped) telephone calls I receive and the pop-up ads
on my computer screen, and the spam e-mail I get, I win something at least five or more times a day.

They all say that it was that on-line sweepstakes application I filled out... but I NEVER did fill out an on-line sweepstakes application!

But I've won cruises, two or three different satellite dish sets, a big screen television, several DVD player/recorder, several digital cameras, $10,000 several times and other lesser amounts of cash, and so forth and so on and on and on and....

I wonder what would happen if I actually ever claimed any of this stuff?

28. Hey, it's a really bad time in all of Africa for anyone with my last name.
I'm getting e-mails from all over Africa telling me that a country man with my last name has died intestate in a car accident or some other unexpected way and that no next-of-kin can be found to inherit a fabulous fortune in the bank for which the e-mail writer works.

If I'd only be so good as to send my bank account routing number, my account number, my social security number, and a good faith amount of cash, the e-mail writer will be happy to share the wealth with me...

16. Back when I had vinyl LPs
at one point, about half my collection was the result of radio station call-in contests. The best one was a contest that permitted you to pick one album from the station's collection for each song you could name that they'd played in the last hour. I think I got ten albums from that one.

When we got married in Vegas, we hit a jackpot on a slot machine that basically paid about half the whole trip, wedding and all, while we were waiting for the taxi to the airport! It was perfect; we didn't have time to blow the money!

Other than that, some minor stuff. Oh wait - one Microsoft product rollout I went to, I filled out the post-event survey and won $100. That was cool.

But I'd say the biggest thing I ever won was election to the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Boston, look out!

31. I won a $10.00 White Castle gift certificate and a WC Cookbook
Edited on Fri Jun-18-04 02:44 PM by Bushneedstogo
I entered the contest at 4:00 am when I was drunk at my local White Castle. I won the Cookbook and $10.00 gift certificate and I guess the gift certificate was to use to try one of the recipes in the cookbook.

I gave the cookbook to my friends wife and the $10.00 gift certificate was used on my way home from a bar one night.

33. A parakeet. Twice. And some Buddy Guy tix.
My boyfriend (at the time) and I went to a bird show. They have a raffle at the show, with prizes including bird toys, food, cages--and even some birds. Two parakeets were among the raffle prizes. Neither of us are the type who win things, yet each of us won one of the parakeets. Sadly, my keet died tragically in a household accident just a few months later.

A couple of years later, at another bird show, two parakeets were among the raffle items. And unbelieveably, he and I each won a keet again! A little girl was bummed because she wanted to win one, so my boyfriend gave his to her.

Another time, I won tickets to see Buddy Guy at a club in Cambridge. It was a radio call-in contest during a blues program in which I hand to call and answer a trivia question about Buddy Guy.

but more often than not, it's a free lunch with strings (i.e. gotta sit through a presentation on cell phones, but my whole company can get lunch with me if we all go!).

I've won $75 in writing contests ($25 in high school, the rest in college) and a few books in trivia contests. Crappy sci-fi (or fantasy, which I can't stand), usually.
