New scanner advice PLEASE

My 2 year-old Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner no longer properly scans slides, although photos, documents, and negatives still scan A-OK. Perfectly exposed but darker-subject slides now preview & scan terminally dark. All attempts by tech support & myself to correct the problem (including manual marquee framing) have failed.

Finding tech reviews on scanners contradictory and virtually useless, I'd really appreciate input from newer-model flatbed owners here at DU on a reliable brand/model which handles slides and negatives especially well (price limit about $300). Speed is NOT a priority, only image quality and reliability.

2. I use a Plustek OpticPro St 48

I love it. It's USB2 so it's fast. Does slides and negatives.

The first 15 Google hits on this product were all in German - must be good, right?

Have you ever had problems with your OpticPro recognizing/scanning slides or negs in their proper exposure/density?

6. No problem....but you are correct it is a german product and they only

support it thru distributers. So you might want to check out who that is in your area. I also hear canon is a good scanner.
