How do I keep the cat off a nightstand?
Ank covers his nightstand with junk. During the night the cat jumps up there and knocks most of it off. Last night it broke a lamp.

Thing is, there's no particularly good reason to go up there. It's in the corner and I know it has an issue about pissing in corners (see other thread) but it hasn't been pissing on the night stand. It also can't use it as a jumping-off-point to go anywhere's else.

1. Put some paprika on there.
He'll find something else to do with his time, and you'll have the best night's sleep (and the most interesting dreams) you've ever had.

13. That's mean
Aluminum foil works really well, they hate the feel of it. Mine used to jump on the headboard and scratch the wood, as soon as I put some foil there he stopped.

4. They love to explore.
Even where they don't pee, they want to see what's up in their environment. There's a good reason they are the avatars of curiousity.

In his head, it's his house, too. And he's right. A certain amount of accomodation is in order. He lives there, and he spends more time there than you do... so the house should be a comfortable place for him.

6. Get rid of the night stand. Put the stuff on the nightstand on the floor.
Works for me.

7. Cats go wherever they want
You just can't stop them. Best thing to do is "cat proof " your house. One of my cats jumps on the kitchen counter the minute I leave the room. He figures he doesn't see me anymore, so I no longer exist.

9. Cat
Use a small water gun and when you see him on the nightstand give him a squirt. I guarantee it will only take three squirts and he will never go near the table again. Works for all things you don't want the cat to get on..

11. Tape Is A Good Answer
Only I would put duct tape on the nightstand sticky side up. Once the cat gets entangled in it for a few minutes, it probably will never want to get up there again.

16. My technique for training cats not to go on tabletops,
counters, etc. - I put a piece of newspaper or similar large paper on the verboten surface, with a large edge of it hanging over. Balance empty aluminum cans on the edge of the paper. The cat will jump or walk on the paper and step on one of the unsupported edges and all the cans will come down and make an ungodly clatter. The cat may never even come in that ROOM again.
