Sinkhole swallows truck on Coastal Bend road

CORPUS CHRISTI - A man's truck was swallowed by a sinkhole that opened up on a Coastal Bend roadway that had been undermined by a water leak.

Cosme Leal III's truck collapsed through the pavement early Wednesday morning and had sunk into the roadway all the way to the top of his windshield by the time police arrived.

Leal said he was on his way to work when he noticed a puddle in the road after a turn. When he slowed down and tried to drive through it, the road collapsed beneath his front tires.

*SNIP*

Leal said he hadn't even had a chance to open his beverage, a banana smoothie, inside the truck before the collapse. No estimates of the damage were immediately available Wednesday. A tow truck pulled his vehicle out of the sinkhole and the water leak was being repaired.

"He certainly found this one for us," said Tilden Smith, 35, water system foreman.

1. Yeah, you could say it's been a tad wet in South Texas.
Glad the guy's OK. Sinkholes can be nasty. It's probably a good thing he didn't hit it going faster.

2. It was the smoothie's fault.
Anyone who drinks and drives deserves to get sunk :D

No way could it be the fault of the city. or their inspectors. or their contractors.
