Has anyone seen "Bubba Ho-Tep"?
I had never even heard of this movie (straight to video?) until I saw a trailer for it.

An elderly Elvis teams up with a guy who thinks he is JFK (played by Ossie Davis) to fight an evil Egyptian spirit who has chosen their long-term care facility as his happy hunting grounds?

This looks like it is either a diamond in the rough and soon to be cult classic or one of the worst movies ever made.

Plot summary

Anyone seen this?

1. It's fucking great
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 07:48 AM by khephra
You'll hear a lot of Bubba fans speaking up for the film.

It had a bit of a problem being released, but it eventually had a limited release that paid for the film (it was shot on the cheap, of course). The director also did Phantasm, so he's a bit of a fan fave, then there's Bruce as Elvis...oh, man it's so great listening to him talk about his penis problems! It's a hoot! (you'll have to watch it to understand).

Two thumbs and two gout ridden big toes up from me.

(Oh, it's serious camp, so if you can't get into camp films then just forget it.)

2. Netflix is sending it to me, so I'm watching it soon.
The description sounded like a must-see. The netflix reveiwers either loved or hated it.

3. see this review
i saw it when it was in theatres (briefly) and was disappointed. here's an excerpt and a link to a review of it that i wrote at the time:

What do you do with a movie that sets up a bizarre but promising premise and then drives 100 miles an hour down the wrong road?

That’s Bubba Ho-Tep, a movie that could have been great, but unfortunately isn’t.

It features an aging Elvis and JFK, both living out the end of their days at a rest home, having fooled the world about their respective deaths. Elvis had traded places with an Elvis impersonator at the height of his fame, and never switched back. JFK, in this film, is black, cleverly a part of his “cover.”

Sadly, what looked for all the world to be a quirky and literate short story instead turned out to be nothing but a comic book. This may work for you, but it did not work for me.

in fairness, Bubba got a lot of glowing reviews as well. Just depends on what you're looking for, I guess.

4. Okay thanks
it sounds like something I will enjoy. I don't mind details like plot and such as long as it has some great lines in it. I have found that lower my expectations leads to less disappointment in the movie area.....and "Hollywood" has given me multiple reasons to lower said expectations.

7. definitely worth seeing...
if only for the Elvis part. If the rest of the movie was as good as Bruce Campbell's take on the King, it would have been in my all time faves.

Hope you like it..

10. Bought it, and haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but...
...in the booklet there's a "heavy Elvis in the white sequined suit" pic of Campbell with the caption "Don't make me use my stuff on you, baby"...

It's directed by Don Coscarelli ("Phantasm") and it has Campbell as Elvis fighting a mummy...it's supposed to be stupid and fun, right? Hey Hollywood...lower THIS!

9. I saw it last weekend
it had it's moments. But, considering the premise, I was hoping to be blown away.

11. make sure you watch the "commentary with the King"
track sometime after you've watched the movie. It's so so friggin funny I had to stop it a couple of times. The premise is that the actual real Elvis has come out of hiding to do a commentary on Bubba Ho Tep and has no idea what the movie is, or is about. Bruce Campbell is knowledgable about Elvis' movie history, and demonstrates it for about 90 hilarious minutes.

The DVD also has Joe R. Lansdale reading the first chapter of the novella upon which the film is based. THis is also an excellent extra and you can see how well Coscarelly captured his quirky written language and turned it in quirky visual language.

13. Okay that does it I'm renting it
I have to say that the extras feature on DVD's (especially outtakes) is the greatest invention of the 21st century.......so far.

14. Yea, I just rented it too.
I didn't even see the trailer. I just saw it in the video store. With the brief summary, and Bruce as Elvis, I thought it was worht the $4. Of course I haven't watched it yet, and the late fees are adding up. I plan to watch it tonight or tomorrow. After you watch, give us a review...Kevin.

16. I just watched it a few nights ago.
I was gonna post about it. My dad loved it and called me and told me to rent it. It's done by the director of Phantasm which is one of our favorites.

Anyway, my husband and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I'll never think of Elvis in the same way.

:)
