Awakened last night by something awful
Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 04:22 PM by DesertedRose
Around 1 am overnight I heard a cat (not my cat) in our backyard fighting for its life. It was the most hideous screaming I've ever heard.

A coyote got to it

By the time I realized what was happening, it was too late.

Why why why why do people leave their cats outside in an area where COYOTES are KNOWN to prowl at night? It's northern New Mexico, for crying out loud.

People like that should never be allowed to have cats again. I had the displeasure of meeting a woman once who actually named her pet cat "CB," which she said stood for "Coyote Bait."

Tasteless, yes, but as long as she doesn't let it out at night where it could actually BE coyote bait....

3. This is awful.
my ex-mother-in-law left my Leo's (chihuahua mix) dad and sister outside (overnight). They live in the country. Both got eaten by coyotes. It broke my heart

People like this shouldn't have animals. This is disgusting.

8. It's quite common late at night to see coyotes just roaming the streets
It escapes me how someone could be so inhumane as to leave their pet outside when they are aware (or they should be aware) that coyotes are around.

My poor house cat heard it all and was pretty shocked, to say the least. (We slept with the windows open last night)

I had to try and calm him down a bit...

10. Used to see them regularly in the middle of Tucson
and people who lived there for decades never knew they were about. Have seen them running through apartment complexes, waiting on curbs of major roads for the clear chance to cross, stalking joggers in the early hours just for fun and practice. They are very opportunistic. Keep cats, dogs and small children close.

And remember that small cats and wee doggies can be carried off by big hungry birds too.

4. That's awful-- poor kitty
How awful. I don't get why people let their cats roam, especially in dangerous areas. I live on a busy street and if I let my cats out, they would quickly become a furry patch stuck to the road.

What a terrible thing to hear. Hope you sleep more peacefully tonight!

9. There's five mountain lions in our county too
At least those are the ones we KNOW they're keeping track of.

Between the mountain lions, the coyotes and the bears coming out of the mountains looking for food....

there really isn't any good excuse to leave vulnerable pets outside.
