I finally ate a cicada

Me and my brother each ate a cicada yesterday. Apparently he had already eaten one so it was not as hard for him. I finally grew enough courage to eat one. Just so you all know, they were still alive when we chomped down on them.

Let me first say that the only thing you have to fight is the lifetime of psychological conditioning that teaches you that "bugs are yucky." In fact, cicadas hardly have any taste at all. The little taste they had was not in any way bad. If they were cooked and lightly seasoned they would probably be very tasty.

I know you all are going to think we are gross for eating them, but this opportunity only comes along once every 17 years. I also think that is important to experience life and try new things.

But the taste is very light and you almost dont even notice it.

7. We were not drunk... totally sober, that was the hard part.

Although we mentioned several times when we were working up the courage to eat them that we should have a few beers and that would make it much easier.

OK, I have eaten bugs just once in my life. And that was fried grasshoppers. But the person who gave them to me told me they were nuts. Then I saw the label on the jar. Yuck!!!!!

Maybe it is more like a negative hype, people think it is so gross to eat cicadas... just wanted to see what it was like for myself.

13. Here's a lovely recipe that I found online. . .

Soft Shelled Cicadas

Ingredients:
1 cup Worcestershire sauce
60 freshly emerged 17 year cicadas
4 eggs, beaten
3 cups flour
Salt and pepper to season flour
1 cup corn oil or slightly salted butter

Directions:
Marinate cicadas alive in a sealed container in Worcestershire sauce for several hours. Dip them in beaten egg, roll them in the seasoned flour and then gently saute them until they are golden brown. Yields 4 main dish servings.

I love the idea that you marinate them alive.

I just got back from a two-week vacation and have been assaulted by one cicada after another.
