Mac experts...
I have a relatively old Max 2VX that I've just gotten out of mothballs. It seems to work okay, but it won't shut down. When I click shut down, it goes through the entire cycle, but as soon as it's about to shut off, it boots back up. Any thoughts on how I might fix this? It's not the off button because it also happened with the keyboard unplugged.

Any help would be appreciated...

4. *snort*
The question I wanted to ask was, "What, you mean Macs have problems too? I thought they were immune to everything!"

14. Mac users have no qualms
about hijacking any thread asking how to remove a Windows virus, so turnabout is definitely fair play.

6. Oh...now them are fightin' words!
It's like this: In order for Macs to be so easy for newbies, SOMEBODY has to be smart enough to MAKE it that easy. That, of course, includes writing the programs that run on it -- which is what I do for food (for the last 9 years).

There's plenty to be an expert about on a Mac, even one running System 7.1, but most of it is so complicated, that very few know it (ie,. the Mac 'Toolbox' API).

Regarding the poster's question: On some Macs of that era, you could twist the power button so that it stuck 'in'. This was meant to reboot the machine automatically after a power failure. Check your power button to see if this is the case. If it has a slot in it (such as would fit a screwdriver), then it's probably one of the machines with the 'rebooting' power buttons. If so, try twisting it a bit counter clockwise (gently!), and see if it pops out a little bit.

9. Two possibilities
One - the battery that controls the clock and the power-on circuit is dead. Quite likely in a machine this old.

Two - on some older machines (and I no longer have a vx here to inspect) you could twist the little slotted button on the power supply (in back of case) to force the unit to remain on when the power was connected. This was so the machine would restart after power failures in server use. You might have had this inadvertantly happen in storage.

If you take care of both of these (check #2 first) you should be able to power off.

13. good luck with 7.5
just make sure you have enough RAM... If I remember correctly 7.5 needs at least 12 megs to run with any semblance of stability, and the machines that shipped with that OS came with a standard 4 megs.
