I just had the most Wondrous Boat Ride!
Round the world and home again
That's the sailor's way
Faster faster, faster faster

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining, is it snowing
Is a hurricane a-blowing

Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of Hell a-glowing
Is the grisly reaper mowing

Yes, the danger must be growing
For the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing

8. "Look at me! I'm on TV!"...
---Mike Teevee, anticipating several future generations' worth of Americans obsessed wih celebrity and the media. Courtesy the great Roald Dahl.

9. If I recall correctly
Mike TeeVee does NOT appear in the book, just the movie. Then again, I read a Portuguese translation that might have been abridged.

10. No, I SWEAR Mike TeeVee was in the book!
Unless I'm now confusing books and movies, and I hope THAT ain' t the case. I loved the book when I was a kid (it was much richer and weirder and more adult, as Dahl tended to be, than the movie). I just watched the movie on cable the other day BUT what I remember about Mike from the movie AND more crucially from the book is that, after Mike beamed himself onto the TV screen, Mr. Wonka sent him to be sssttreettcchhheeddd out. If you listen to the dialogue from the film, the sheer perversity and violence inherent in stretching this inch-long figure back to normal size is pure Dahl. In fact, I remember an illustration from the original book (pre-movie) which showed Mike, post-stretching, looking like a very uncomfortable inch-worm, tall, thin and bending over. Yeah, Mike was in the book. I'll buy you a flat-screen TV if I'm wrong.

11. Yeah, now I faintly recall this stretching thing.

I was 11 when I read the book. That was 1976. It actually was a school assignment. We were to choose from a publisher's catalog, buy the books (very cheap, and they came with bonus crossword magazines) and do a report. Cool!

In subsequent years, I'd most often choose pulp-type sci-fi books instead. But CATCF was a gem.

14. So, what, I guess...now you owe ME a TV?
Kidding, of course. But what do you mean by "pulp-type sci-fi books"? Just curious...
