Poll question: Worst baby name suggested so far by my husband,
Okay, some of you thought it was bad when I suggested Zeus. (I'm off that on by the way.)

Here are some names my husband has suggested lately for our son. Which do you think is the worst?

;-)

(P.S. Right now, I'm pushing for Garrison.)

17. It's a boy?
Edited on Sat May-29-04 01:10 PM by aquart
And there's no one in the history of either family worthy of commemoration? No act of nobility or creativity or kindness in all the generations? No good and decent friend no longer present?

No name with profound meaning that a child can slyly work into conversations? Because children are intensely interested in each other's names.

What does a child want? food, shelter, love, a sense of belonging. What do any of these names contribute to that?

I just realized. This is reminding me of writer's bloc. The writer is desperately, despairingly trying to come up with something new, something original, something GREAT, when all he really has to do is reread his own story, and answer his unanswered questions.

I'm going out on a limb: You already know your child's name, but you've been running away from it. Why?

54. I think my child is named Garrison.
Partly because I love Prarrie Home Companion. Partly because my husband's dad, Gary, insisted it would be a boy and he was right.

As for family names. The only man on my side of the family worthy of having my child named after him is my dad, Bill, and I just don't like that name.

All I know for sure is that my darling husband's suggestions bite the big one.

"phase" where he wanted our son to have about eight names, such as Buckminster, Beelzebub, Ziggy, Tiresais, Zeus, Bellerophon, etc. I think he was just so excited about having a kid! We settled on a good basic name, when I said no. It is funny to think about, but good to remember that your child will have to take his/her name into the future alone at some point. So....

Avon. Met a redhead girl name Chillys. Neighbor's boys are, Steel and Sterling. Parents who set up their children for redicule and humiliation should be jailed. I named my daughter Jill. When she went to college, she legally changed it to a stronger name; Victoria. Don't call her Vicky. It only costs $80. to change your name.

Steel and Sterling are in Jr High. Every day they have to live up to the redicule of their names.

32. Look at some Basque names
I learned a little (a very little) Basque last summer. They have some incredibly strange and cool names.

The girls' names are much stranger than the boys', but the boys' names still carry some significant weight.

Here's a few:

AGER: gatherer
AINGERU: messenger ("Angel(o)")
AITOR: mythical Basque patriarch
AKIL: from the Akil
ANDER: Basque form of Andrew (manly)
ANTTON: praiseworthy
ASENTZIO: ascending
BENAT: bear
BINGEN, BITTOR: conquers
DANEL: Basque form of Daniel (judge)
DEUNORO: all saints (Toussaint)
DUNIXI: Basque form of Dionysus (god of wine)
EDORTA: Basque form of Edward (rich guardian)
EDRIGU: Basque form of Richard (strong ruler)
EDUR: vintner (ardoa = wine)
ELAZAR: help of God (Eliezar)
ERROMON: from Rome (Roman)
ETOR: steadfast
GABIREL: Basque form of Gabriel (God-given strength)
GAIZKA: savior
GENTZA: peace
GORKA: farmer
GOTZON: messenger (Angel; Angelo)
GURUTZ: Holy Cross (Cruz)
IKER: visitor; pilgrim
IMAÑOL: Basque form of Emmanuel
IÑAKI, INIGO: ardent
IXAKA: laughs (Jacques)
JAKOME: Basque form of James (supplanter)
KEMEN: strong
KEPA: rock (i.e., Peter)
KERBASI: warrior
KOLDOBIKA: Louis
MIKEL: godlike (Michael)
MIKOLAS, MIKOLAUS: of the conquering people
ORTZI: meaning unknown ("sky", see URTZI)
PALBEN: blond
TXANTON: Basque for Joseph Anthony (He adds/priceless)
TXOMIN: like God
UGUTZ: baptize; name for John the Baptist
UNAI: shepherd
URTZI: sky
XABIER, XAVIER: owns a new house (Xavier)
XANTI: named for Saint James
XIMON, XIMUN: God is heard
YOSU: God saves (Joshua)
YULI: youthful (Jules)
ZADORNIN: Saturn
ZIGOR: punishes
ZORION: happy (Felix)

X = "sh"
Z = "ss" (sibilant S)
S = halfway between X and Z
TX = "ch" (t + sh)
TZ = "ts" (t + ss)
ZK = "sk" (ss + k)
J = "y" or "zh" ("zh" is semi-official)
all other letters as in Spanish

For a language with less than 3 million speakers, there's a lot of Basque resources on the web. It's probably because there are two major computer science programs in universities in Basque Country.

Good name-hunting!

36. He's joking, right?
Don't forget your kid will have to live with the name for who knows how long. And spell it. And maybe spell it and explain it to every single person he ever meets.

I cannot understand parents who give the kid a cutesy spelling of an otherwise okay name (Kaytilinne, Brit'ni).

Here's a few rules: No apostrophes. Ideally the name should identify the gender, although a lot of people think it's cool to give a girl a traditional boy's name (I've met the odd female Michael or David). A "unique" spelling that forces the person to always have to explain the spelling and/or correct pronunciation is a bad idea. (Joan but pronounced JoAnne ).

No juniors (although that doesn't seem to be at issue here). Each kid deserves a new name, even if it's a traditional one.

It's also useful to read all the birth announcements for the six months or so before your kid is born so as to avoid your son be one of seven Christophers or Madisons in his or her class. Case in point: my 21 year old son has never had fewer than three Kate, Katies, Caitlyns, whatever the spelling his classrooms in three different states. About eight years ago in a math class at my local junior college, four of the eight females were named Jennifer. All were 19 years old.

And in case you can't tell, I think each and every one your husband has suggested is a very bad idea. You do not want people to gasp or giggle when they hear what you've named him.

38. Agreed..all five suck..
Ya gotta be careful naming your child. Think of it in the long term. Would you like to go through your entire life with a name no one could ever spell?
Or one that every single teacher/employer you'll ever have mispronounces it every time its mentioned?
The child will have plenty to deal with in his life without the daily teasing of peers and raised eyebrows from adults along the way.

Think dignity if nothing else.

I recall the Jennifer/Jason years..In my daughters 2nd grade class, there were 14 kids.
Five girls out of eight were named Jennifer. Four boys of the six were named Jason,this left Jonathon, Scott, Michael, Rachael, Sara M. and Sarah H. to try to "fit in". LOl

Within three days the school office took pity on the teacher and schuffled them around with the other 2nd grade class across the hall.
The teacher told me she had never had to deal with anything like this.
It became so humorous that the principal told the story at an awards banquet that next spring.

Be Careful. You might love the name but your child has to live all his days with it.

39. General principles
1. Avoid any name that will make people wonder "Is it a boy or a girl?"

2. Avoid any name or variant of a name that the poor child will have to spell and/or explain for the rest of his life.

Zoetrope flunks on both counts.

Kermit was actually a respectable name before the Frog ruined it. It was the name of one of Theodore Roosevelt's sons, and also the name of one of my college professors.

I would be careful of nameing my child something that has definite "pet name" overtones.

Like Spot or Rover, or something like that. Sure most people would agree that no one would name their kid Spot or Rover, but then sooner or later one show up.
I say this because my neighbors poodle is named "Zeus".

Its an unfortunate reality.

50. True story... a number of years ago I had a student
(about sixteen) who was pregnant. On her work she was always doodling a gazillion different names for her baby. I don't think I saw a sheet of paper that ever had fewer than fifteen different possible names.

The day comes. She is at summer school and the ambulance has to take her from the school to the hospital. Happens pretty quickly - and her daughter makes the first appearance. The nurse asks my student if she has a name for the baby. The girl says "I dunno, what do you think?" The nurse says... how about the name "D'iantee" (sound like Deyantey)... My student says - That's the name!

Go figure.

I think Garrison wins over the names you have listed. I am sorta partial to Scandanavian names.. kinda like Nils (pronounced NEELs but with a shorter pronunciaton than Neal).
