Things that are over-rated. I'll start........picnics.
First of all they look very good, I admit - mostly in the movies, of course.
And they have those cute little wicker suitcases with all the adorable thingees in them like checked napkins, navy blue handled silverware, etc.
In reality there is no privacy, there are bugs - flying and otherwise and the wind is always threatening to wipe out the little checked thingees and the plastic glasses filled with merlot - plus its hard to find a good spot to plunk down your blankie!.

Endless lines, obscenely inflated prices, and rides that violently fling me around. Gosh, what fun! :puke:

6. Hmmmmmm....it was sweet (!) of you to ask(!!) but in what way
do your picnics overcome the nasty obstacles specified in my post, such as wind, bugs, and sun???

Wind-sometimes
Bugs-There's not too many bugs yet where I live.

Sun is an essential picnic quality.

I think your problem is not with picnics but with mother nature.

Well, you MAY have a point there - as much as I love the idea of the
environment in the abstract - hanging around and being actually IN the aforementioned "environment" isn't all that much fun to me. Basically I'm an indoor person - during the day - but at night - watch out - there is not stopping me regardless of wind, bugs and moonlight!

22. That's true - I guess its the sun -' hate the sun!!! Love the cover of
night. There is mystery in the night. In the sunlight - well, it all just hangs out - warts and all.
I wonder what a nighttime picnic in the park would be like? Alright, I suppose - have to keep a wary eye out for muggers, of course! Pass the mace!

28. I agree with some of your thoughts about the dark
I like when your in a club and it's dimly light expect for the rotating scrobe lights but I hate it when the club starts to close and all the lights go up and then you really get to take a look at what that person you've been dancing with all night looks like. Sometimes it could be scary!

4. Camping
I hate camping.

Having to deal with insects and wild animals that could kill me is a bit much, yet alone not being able to shower for a few days.

Plus there's no internet access out in the deep woods as of yet.

Camping sucks. In my opinion.

Camping sucks. I hate camping. Last time I went camping I got bitten so badly by mosquitoes that I had to be taken to the Emergency Room and given antihistamine shots. Needless to say, we don't even own a sleeping bag anymore.

14. My friend almost had a bear fall on her tent . No lie!
In the Canadian Rockies - she and her camping buddy tied their food up in a tree and in the middle of the night a bear went up in the tree to untie their handiwork and it (the bear) fell and landed right next to their tent - BOOM!!!!
She said they could hear it snorting and panting for quite a while as it ripped open their backpacks. She said they were frozen still in terror and barely even breathed for several minutes while Mr. Bear did his thing - in fact they didn't even look outside until the next morning wherein they surveyed the damage - as I recall he actually clawed open a can of something or other - she should have saved the can for her grandchildren - what a story. She said there were two huge claw marks in it wherein the great beast slurped up some liquid - maybe is was soup.

7. Oh, God, I "fergot" about THAT - ugh!!! Don't even go there!!!
You are in Cook County, too??
Remember that one guy that always used to get on the news every year - was it New Years Eve or something and he would be sitting outside some County office all night to be the first in line to get a picnic permit? I think his name was "Moose Murphy" or something. As I recall he didn't get the first permit this year - do you remember what happened to "Moose"??

8. I remember Moose, yes.
Edited on Fri May-28-04 08:04 PM by greatauntoftriplets
I live Far North Side of the city -- near Loyola's Lake Shore Campus.

Think they somehow changed the rules on getting permits, so Moose didn't participate.

Of course, the forest preserves now have Port-A-Potties vs. the old outhouses. Not much improvement, to my mind.

On edit: Added link about Moose.

No sitting outside the County office in a lawn chair probably. I bet they allow applying on the I n t e r n e t now - so modern yet kind of sad - it was a tradition. I will miss him.

17. Yeah, dammit!! Actually, all non-essential pillows
Not just the abominations that end up on couches. But the 8 that sit the @*$^@ bed you have to throw to the floor, the ones that sit in the @(%^# chairs that you have to throw to the floor, and then, of course, the @($^@ ones that sit on the @(%^#^ floor to begin with.

(@*%^$*^ pillows.

Funny you bring that up - I was just re-arranging the closet today, and had to deal with all the @(&*# pillows that I stashed in there. Maybe I'll throw 'em all away, but I don't know if maybe they're valuable or something.

@(&(%# women and yer &**#@( pillows.

Except you, NSMA. You can have all the pillows you want, and I'll never rail on you for them.

42. Low rider jeans, tattoos above the ass, and especially tans
Heavily tanned is grotesque, especially on an older woman. Let's see, the only skin I'll ever own. Solution, burn it. Brilliant!

I turn around and check out young, shapely, jean-clad gals on the Las Vegas Strip primarily while wagering with my friend on the certainty of a pathetic, mandatory backside tattoo. We'll bet one dollar as a base and make odds like, "Oh, look at this bleach job. She's at least a 5-1 favorite." Then we'll laugh like hell when there's a tattoo we've seen at least a hundred times before.

I like toned shapely legs, dammit. This jean craze keeps even the best ones covered and therefore nonexistent.
