Modern Western flicks...Silverado.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000JZI9/103-8462185-7346217?v=glance

The first of the modern westerns and a great movie. It did for the Western what "Lost Boys" did for the vampire flick.

2. I just wish they had followed up on it.
Before that I think the last great Western was "Outlaw Jossie Wales".

I'll grant you that much...but it didn't resurect the genre the way that Silverado did.

7. The Quick and the Dead; Unforgiven; Pale Rider
Edited on Fri May-28-04 06:55 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Silverado didn't quite do it for me - seemed a bit too much about "Let's get the four hot young movie studs on the screen" as opposed to a "I have a great story to tell" movie. It was still a good movie, don't get me wrong. Just not as good as it could have been.

Edited on Fri May-28-04 07:30 PM by DarkPhenyx
White hat vs. Black? that isn't a good story line?

Oh Please! Like half the stuff in the old school wasn't about getting apretyt face on the screen. NAd while I'll admit Danny is handsome, he is by no means a young movie stud.

13. Oh, you know, I've realized I was thinking Young Guns
I don't remember Silverado at all.

And I did ever say all the old school ones were sheer excellence and filled with integrity? No, I didn't. Young Guns (not Silverado) seemed much less about story then it did about putting a bunch of pretty faces up.

Though, since it was one of the first new westerns, if I were gonna try to revive a genre I'd want to maximize the people who went - and putting those four guys in brought, I bet, a hell of a lot of people who wouldn't normally have gone to a western.

So in the end, perhaps it was for the best. :-)

Seriously...you do.

Muy fav quote from the movie? "When the world dosen't fit your measure? You make adjustments."

33. But you see, "Silverado" reminds me of the song "Desperado"
and the utter sellout of the Eagles... so this is tough to contemplate. :-)

I checked out Silverado on IMDB, and now I remember it. That assjerk Costner, but a lot of good actors, and especially John Cleese who was, to me, the highlight of the movie.

Woo hoo!

36. I like Danny Glover. It's just that I was a Cleese fan
for about a decade or more before I ever heard of Danny Glover.

So of course I noticed Cleese more.

I do like Glover, though. I wish he had been used more often, and more seriously, by Hollywood. But that's still kind of the fate of the african actors, isn't it? Not quite taken seriously enough.

The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is possibly the single greatest film of all time, of any genre.

Edited on Fri May-28-04 10:02 PM by moof
With the exception of the Great Escape it's hard to think of a film that had as good a combination of actors preformances, direction,
cinematography and script. There have been better ones of each but not as high a level all together. Was that convoluted enough ?

38. Yes, Wild bunch had great actors and was a good film,
but the script and plot were not as gripping as The GB&U

Depends a bit on taste though certainly reasonable people could go with either one. The Mag 7 would be a much closer call but the fact that there are only three characters to carry the script in TGB&U makes it a better film.

Maybe it's the lack of dialogue, but thinking about it, if it was the desert Island for 20 years and only room for one more DVD The Good bad and Ugly is getting the nod of the three.

What's your take ?
